Default Sumitomo HTR ZIII Tires on C2S in SoCal

So its time to replace my Hankook Vertus. . I am thinking of getting of the Sumitomo HTR Z III for $500. I try to daily drive my car and do some canyons on the weekends. Do you guys have any experience with them?

There is also a special closeout on the Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Spec for $1000 as well as the Bridgestone RE71R for $1k, is it worth double the price for them?

The Sumi is the cheapest good tire you can buy for the 993. Best bang for the buck out there. I ran a set for a few years on my C4S and thought they were damn good for the price. They offer at least 85% of the performance of the best tire out there for less than half the cost.

I'd say try the Sumis. Can't go wrong for $500, and no way are the Dunlop and Bridgestone twice the tire at double the price.

Good luck

+1. I have them on two of my cars and for a street tire they're an excellent choice. If you do a search you'll find lots of comments about Sumi's .

They're a decent cheap tire that should last a while, considering their higher UTQG rating.

I'm on my second set of Sumis. They are a lot of tire for the money. I'll buy them again when needed.

Yeah me too, I couldn't get the Contis when it was time and got the Sumis instead, very happy: 5 track days a year and canyon carving. 10k miles and no sign of needing replacement.

I've used four or five sets on different Porsche's and the Sumi's have always treated me well. No need to go X2 on cost for a daily IMO.

I’ll be the contrary opinion here. I’d say it depends on what you want. Are you squeezing every last ounce of enjoyment out of your car? If so, get the RE71r.

I want every mile I spend in my car to be special. I try not to waste my time on boring drives. When I’m driving the 993, its an event - I want magic to happen. For that, RE71r every time.

If it’s a tire for daily driving which doesn’t involve pushing limits, then any of the low cost “high performance” tires will be fine. Sumi, Conti, Hankook, etc.

But IMO if you’re doing any track driving or challenging canyon runs, then there is no comparison between these vs something like the RE-71R.

I run Conti Extreme Contact DW on my street wheels where I’m not pushing any limits, and to get long tire life. I have RE-71R’s on my track wheels. I tried using my Conti’s for a DE, and I had to drive my car like it was wet out in comparison to the RE-71R’s. The max grip of the RE-71R IS 2x that of my Conti’s, but so is the wear rate.

But like I say, I don’t think I could tell the difference if driving casually on typical public roads.

+1 for the Sumi's. Switched to them when I could no longer get the Conti Sports Contact in the right size. Couldn't be happier, quieter, more comfortable ride, handle well and way less expensive. One caveat, if they sit for a while you may get a flat spot but it will quickly run out.

Just after I bought them my wife and I did a run down the east coast of Australia from Townsville in the north to Melbourne where we hopped on a ferry across to Tasmania, around Tasmania and back again.

The west coast of Tasmania was fantastic, hilly, windy, great roads and no cars. We had, or I should say, I had a blast. The 993 was made for roads like these.

I would not buy them again (Sumitomo).
They are OK for street only use in mixed weather conditions.
got way too greasy too quickly at track days

if street only, probably a good choice.

if you have DE / track day ambitions, look elsewhere - Hankook RS-3 / RS-4
Or use the choices you list above if you are tracking.
Yes, the other choices are worth twice the price IMO.

Yes, I am opinionated and have spent the time / $$$ researching what works for me.

I like the Yoko AD08Rs and Bridgestone Re-71Rs for street / DE tyres.
See below.

From L-R
RS-3 / AD08R / RE-71R / some old kumhos
