Default Return to stock 95 6spd short-shift/shift-linkage?

Hey

I bought a car recently and while there is no record of it having a short shift kit fitted, it does show that at some stage the stock coupler was replaced for a wevo psj 993 one.

http://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Inf...93&SVSVSI=911L

The stock part seems to be this.....

http://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Inf...EM&SVSVSI=911L

Is this enough to account for a stiff shift feel or is it likely that other parts were swapped out and if so, is there a way to check what I have and what I need prior to attempting to rectify this? It feels so different from what I remember from my 96 as well as another 95 I drove recently owned by a local member who came over to give me a more recent point of comparison for my car. Anywway, the stiffness robs the car of its fluidity as well as being occasionally difficult to get into first gear and its gotta go!

Links to how to check for anything mentioned would be much appreciated.

Cheers

G

When I bought my car shifts were stiff and I could not shift smoothly. I thought linkage was worn, replaced fluid ( looked like coffee!) and shifting greatly improved.

yes, that style shift rod will cause a much more direct shift feel. Like a bolt action rifle mechanism is how it feels to me.

The other part of the mod is the RS shift arm which has a bit quicker ratio. That will not cause the harshness though, just a bit (20%?) more effort.

Anybody got a stock shift linkage and coupler they'd like to sell if they've switched to one of these other solutions?

https://www.wevo.com/Products/Shifte...ts_PSJ-993.htm

I'll have a WEVO shift linkage available pretty soon if anybody is interested.

$75 shipped is a gift for these parts!
A little recon and nylon shift cups and it could be ready for action.

G, what Ilko is selling (an you should absolutely grab) is the answer. i believe the issue is with the fork (bottom part on Ilko's pic) that was replaced by a shorter RS fork. Additionally, make sure all nylon cups are in good shape and, yes, change the fluid. There's a bit of difference between hard shifts and stiff shift (semantics, but there's a different feel, depending on what the issues are).

Oh, and post pics of what you take out of there. Would be really funny if there's a Golden Rod or some other interesting bits in the car now.

^ +1 - make sure those nylon cups are in good shape. I'd probably go ahead and order a couple; they're cheap - part number (928 116 145 03).

One more thing to check are the 4 bushings (part number 964 424 115 00) that slide on the pipe thing (not sure the proper term) when you shift gears . Once you're in there replacing parts, you'll see what I mean.

Those bushings rarely fail, but they can become packed with old grease and dirt causing friction when you move the shifter. I'd remove, clean, and lube them with some synthetic grease while you're in there.

+2 on the nylon cups. I did the RS shift rod & RS shifter. It was not until I changed the cups did I realize why it felt so bindy. I should have started there first.

One other thought. When Golden Rod is installed, you have to flip the rubber "hanger" bushings. If GR is in the car now, they'll have to be flipped back to accommodate the stock rod. Also, they might be pretty deteriorated. And, finally, if they weren't flipped and GR is in there, it rubs something fierce on the tunnel cover underneath, possibly creating aforementioned shift stiffness.

Thanks everybody, I'll know when I get the stock parts and the needed bushings etc and see whats in there. The only record is the PSJ 993 but I just don't think it's possible that the shift action difference is accountable to that alone. At this stage, for a daily driver, I want smooth and clean and not notchy but fast.

I'm pretty sure that flipping that bushing is only required for the SSK, not the GR.

The OP's description makes me think that an SSK may have been installed along with the GR, in which case the bushings could be an issue.

That's what I'm thinking, too. So when Op puts on Ilko's stock parts, he'll have to consider the proper bushing orientation.
