Question about grill under retractable spoiler
 

On the left hand side, there is what appears to be air intake, a big squarish hole with a rubber trim around it.

Is that rubber trim supposed to be all the way around the grill opening on the top, bottom, or half & half?

the rubber "seal" around the hole on mine is half on top of the grill and half on the bottom...doesn't seem right.

Sorry if this is cryptic. I'm trying to hunt down a squeak and this might help me out.

Are you talking about the seal on the "grill" visible here on the left? Or is it something attached to the decklid? Does this photo help?

It is on the decklid itself, but looks sort of like the rubber seal on the left side of this photo, though mine is 95 and hence no varioram. Thoughts?

I think if you inspect carefully you'll find it's the rubber seal surrounding the air intake as shown in Brad's pic that is just protruding above the plastic grill on the deck lid. When the lid is closed the grill contacts the seal. However, the seal does not mate perfectly with the grill & has some play to it which causes it to shift around a bit. It's normal & nothing to worry about.

Jos, if you open your rear compartment, the grill and other black parts on the left in the picture should look the same for our '95 models (mine lacks the crest). The varioram is the aluminum stuff in the top middle.

As Dan said, when the rear lid is closed the lip around the grill fits against an opening in the lid. My seal around rubber "grill" is constantly coming loose. I wouldn't be suprised if yours was missing a portion and that's why it doesn't look like the picture above.

I just checked mine, and with the spoiler up and the lid closed it looked just like yours. I just fixed it, albeit I'm sure temporarily. The rubber boot easily pulls out to fit all around the opening.

As others said, nothing to worry about.

Thx guys. I'm going to go home and tinker. Haven't been stressed that it is "wrong" per se, but I have a squeak coming from somewhere back there, and I'm wondering if a poorly seated seal is causing it...anxious to give it a go.

JPS...It is very common for that rubber lip to "slip" out and end up half on top and half on bottom of the grill. I'll bet your seeing the bottom right piece of the rubber lip sitting on top of the grill. Mine did the same thing and almost all others I looked at did the same thing. However, it can be fixed (sorta). When the grill and the rubber lip are making contact, you can press the lip down so that is under the grill...the way it is suppose to rest. You can do this with the car at rest, through the spoiler grill (the one that raises and lowers). After I get done driving, I go to the rear of the car, reach in there with my finger, press the lip down under the grill like it is suppose to be. If you do this every time, that rubber lip piece will sorta "learn" or form itself to stay under the grill. Mine used to always slip out on top, now it never does! :D

Yeah, that is what mine is doing...half over, half under...pushed it all the way under last night, seemed to help the squeak.

I'll start a rigorous training program for it ASAP...also going to tinker with a couple of the support bolts underneath...see if I can adjust it somewhat...it is pretty crooked.

I have to go "undo what I did." Mine was half in/out, and I thought it was all supposed to be out. <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

I wish all fixes were this easy.
