What the hell, it looks burned out? Having already made the bad decision not to illuminate the entire strip, who thought it was a good idea to fade it out in the middle? And why do they still have a job?

From reading your post, I think the Jaguar F-Type is ideally suited for you. Very iconic and tactile. Lots of analog dials. Proper gear lever that works. Sport mode selector switch without need for sport chrono. No sport chrono. Not too luxurious. Vents in the traditional place.
Porsche has always been a more forward looking brand. And this car is going to kill it from a sales perspective. But there are options for those who want something more traditional.
Forward looking? A car that's looked the same for 60 years, has a rear engine and prioritizes perfecting heritage rather than radically transforming it? Not to mention the fact that the 992 will look like a 991 to 99.99% of people, and has literally made "retro" its main design theme (something I applaud and like, btw).
The F Type isn't exactly iconic, and arguably can be said to be more modern looking than a 992. I don't find an F Type to be all that tactile, not as much as a 991, not as many analogue dials. I actually drove an F Type again recently. Not a bad car, actually quite good, but not as sporty as a 991, doesn't sound as raw and untethered as a 991.1 (its exhaust is almost embarrassingly synthetic with those ridiculously engineered and replicated backfires), and the deal breaker: A slushbox which feels very much like a slushbox.

I see what you mean in regards to the fact that the 992 is a purposeful retro throwback, clearly making an effort to mimic the lines of the early 911. However, what I mean is I find the 991's more simple, analogue and effortless homage to said early 911, to be a more authentic evolution. The 992 is an homage for homage's sake, imo, while the 991 is a clear homage in the sense where it carries the bloodline, but doesn't try to advertise that fact. When you sit in the cars; the 992 feels like anything but a classic 911, what with all the digital gauges, massive vertical dashboard space, etc. The 991 actually feels similar to sitting in a classic 911 much more so. Execution vs optics. If it wasn't for the 991's lower screen, it would look even more like the classic design more so than the 992, imo.

I agree. At first glance, the 992 really looks like a refreshed 991.
The 992 is obviously a beefed out 991, but man does the 991 look absolutely flawlessly fluid in its architecture and proportions. No gimmicks whatsoever, they just designed it to be holistically proper.

Agreed. Most people will never tell the difference.

Porsche really screwed themselves with the 991’s exterior design. They got it so right that it would prove near impossible to surpass without serious effort or a complete redesign to reset with ( i.e.993 to 996).
With the 992 they did neither and failed miserably as a result.
