If you cover the bottom half of both the front and rear bumper with your hand the 992 looks great. Give it a try.

To me it looks much better on the darker colors blue and black. Red and white look like a disaster.

I'm starting to think that is the big problem with both the front and rear bumpers. The body colored front and rear lip is covered in black tape. I think once all of the tape is removed, it will start to begin to make a bit more sense.

I still like the overall design of the 991 better but I'm still reserving judgement for the final reveal and being able to park my 991 next to a 992 at the dealer. I'm sure I will end up in a 992 at some point, it just might not be until the GTS is available.

I am very glad I have a flock of 9[98]1s. I could live with the Cylon rear, the too busy front end, and the bloody booger CHMSL on the 992. I don't see those when I'm driving.

But, the interior is a turn-off. The haptic interface center console (from the Panamera) is a human factors fiasco. (And yes, I've used it in the Panamera.) It's not about how it looks but about how it is actually operated; it requires more attention-off-the-road eye contact than the button panel on the 9[98]1s. Frankly, interiors on all Porsches except for the 928 have just sucked for decades from a UI standpoint. Porsche got it right with the 928 and then 'evolved to the 928 interior' over the years. The 9[98]1s had the first interiors since the 928 that I could stand which is why we've got nothing from the 'in between' years.

I'm going to see about picking-up a 718 GTS 6-speed before it gets Panamerized like the 992 and then call it 'done.'

I think there is a zero percent chance that all that black plastic on the F & R bumpers (looks like tape in the front) is there to stay. No way. Just look at the Panamera.

There's definitely still tape on the front and back. The bottom lips of both bumpers are body color, you can even see some bits peeking out beneath the tape.

I like the front, but the whole rear looks weird. The stacked straight lines of the rear are reminiscent of a thin-but-not-in-peak-form man's fat rolls when sitting at his desk. Did the designers merely glance downward for inspiration?

Guys...when the 992 is released...and if it is no good...then vote with your wallets. Porsche will be forced to change the design elements for 992.2 generation then.

Lets see what happens...isn't the release date somewhere around Oct anyway?

I havent watched previous generations unveil but this looks ready to go when the tape comes off. I think the paintable valence options will be there to cover up all the black exterior shennanigans as one sees fit. The exterior will grow on me eventually. However it doesnt look like the norelco can even shift. This would make the only non 918 porsche without a shift lever. Kind of wierd after nailing it... finally after a decade of wheel buttons and backwards levers.... in the 991.2. Also the double decker dash and big gulp holder seems very disintegrated and non functional. In the panny it takes wayyyy too long to change settings, and maybe this is ok in 8th gear highway cruising. This will need remediation in the 992.2 imo. Lets hope they dont do all of these interior changes to the GT series. If they dont have racetracks in china we might be in trouble...

I've been studying the photos of the test cars in various colors and I think we are in for a nasty surprise once the camo tape comes off, and it is not about the rear bumper. The rear bumper will be the least of worries (once the black tape comes off). The looks of the rear of the 992 will break tradition from every previous generation of 911.

This is the key detail: There is a body colored strip below the rear window and above the rear radiator grills. I think in every test car, this strip is being covered by body colored wrap. It will actually be black in the final car, regardless of chosen body color. If you look closely at the various spy pics, you will see this. The car looks great (bumper issues aside) because this strip is still body colored in all the test cars.

It seems like a small detail, but if that strip is black, then visually, the rear window will merge with the black radiator grill, giving the illusion of a very long rear window in every body color except black. In all previous 911 generations, the bottom of the rear window always meets visually with the c of the side windows. This creates the fundamental look of all 911s: a greenhouse formed by the windows, and a muscular humped look in the rear. If the bottom of the rear window becomes extended, it will lose that characteristic muscular hump of the 911. It will look like say a Cayman from the back. The characteristic muscular and powerful look is gone. The only muscularity is from the rear wheel arches. I'm not sure if i am describing this clearly. But the change in look will be dramatic. And completely pointless. Details aside, the proportions/shape of the rear of the 992 seems perfect to me (looking from the black test mules). Why do they then f it up for sake of fashion?

It saddens me to see VW gradually getting rid of many of the things that have made Porsche cars unique in the past, its heritage. Little things, but little things that add up, little things that become even more important in this age of shared chassis and parts bins. Case in point: Every previous 911 had handlebar type exterior door handles. They decided to get rid of that. Sure the new ones are sleek, like a supermodel: soulless. And the interior L-shaped door handles now look like that of every other Audi/Volkswagen. And even the bigger things: the sound of the engines, now the fundamental look of the rear. Ugh.

Porsche should always hire an real enthusiast to design the 911. Who are they hiring these days? Totally dislike the shaver....it looks tiny and does not fit the design of 911. Oh well, lets wait till the official launch and see what happens. I know all of us are complaining, but I doubt it will do anything. I doubt even Porsche Management Team is browsing this thread and discussing the "shaver" ****
