That was frikken cool. And yes LnC993, sure looks like a GT4 and Box Spyder.

Also, camera man has a “car girl” with them. A rarity. Good for them.

I don't dislike them, but use the stick as much as I use the steering wheel. I'll go way out and say that my GTS does not have paddles, but the "thumb buttons" (or whatever they were/are called) and find them very useful,...I can do either up or down from either side and of course they are just as fast as the paddles or stick. How's that for being in the minority :-)

For sure that's what you see - the question is what you hear ?

Is it something about the flat six or is Porsche just trying to make them sound more raw and simply missing the mark?

We should move on from the exhaust. It's water under the bridge. They will never be able to match the old version. We might as well let it go.

Two different engines and both have direct effect on the exhaust. One cannot duplicate the other.

+1. Another minority here. I like my multi-functional steering wheel with the "thumby" paddles. When PDK is in manual, I only use the stick. I had a sport design steering wheel in a prior car - but a few times at a DE the position of the wheel made it awkward to paddle shift. Like the stick better.

Just a shame that Ferrari and McLaren seem to be able to make a turbo motor sound pretty good but Porsche can't seem to best a Civic in that department. Makes no sense to me.

Flat versus V layout.

Can't fight geometry, or quantum harmonies.

Also, the turbos that capture more energy tend to disturb the flow more for many reasons (e.g., using much of pulse energy in addition to the gas pressure and thus messing up the pulses). For example, the current M3 sounds like wet farts but lesser BMWs with the same turbo straight 6 sound better. Porsche seems to try to care more about low-rev driveability and fuel economy, so they went with more "disruptive" turbo designs. Another evidence of that is the manifold design, that seems to optimize for faster catalyst warm-up and low-end turbo response by trapping as much heat as possible and providing shortest and more combined path for exhaust gasses rather than optimizing individual header tube length for better sound.

... and exhaust length.

The more length and volume you have to play with the more latitude you have in tuning the sound of the exhaust. You can add resonators, combiners, play with manifold design etc. But, when you have to stuff the complete exhaust and two cats in something the size of two bread boxes you're kinda screwed.

Here is one way turbo engines may sound good again - via electric turbocharging: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/fe...s-sound-better

What controls this action? you ask. It’s a microphone placed in the car’s cabin—Ferrari suggests near the driver’s head—that would serve to guide the engine computer in letting that exhaust turbine loose for more exhaust shriek.
sigh...
