There were some interesting things they could have done, and I'm somewhat disappointed that they chose not to try. There is no law that says that a hybrid 911 would have had to suck.

For instance, they could have turned the C4 into a hybrid by replacing the heavyweight mechanical AWD system with a pair of electric motors in the front hubs. It wouldn't have to weigh that much more, it would take advantage of regenerative braking and eliminate the need for lameness like auto start/stop, and it would save wear and tear on the engine in heavy traffic.

The batteries alone would weigh more than the 110 lbs the AWD system adds. Then you have the batteries and cabling plus the regenerative braking system.

Look the the craziness with GT model demand, not so great sales of 991.2, and sales disaster of 718. I think they're getting a dose of reality of what the market wants. You think anyone wants a 911 hybrid?

They can't move Penny or Cayenne hybrids as is.

They're hoping Mission E is a home run or they're in BIG trouble with the BIG $$$$ investment in it. I personally don't see electric moving forward as fast as many people think. Oil is cheap and plentiful, and political agendas change very often.

It's not clear yet that the 718 is a disaster worldwide. It was never going to sell well in the US, but it may still be the right car for rigged markets where larger engines are arbitrarily taxed out the wazoo.

One thing that would have made the 718 more interesting to US buyers is if it were more technologically advanced -- e.g., a hybrid -- instead of a cynically-conceived anchor for the 911 market. Instead, they built an all-new IC engine that will not be a significant powerplant in the long run regardless of where the politics go.

Largely agreed, they are putting a lot of eggs in that particular basket.

But political conditions are temporary by nature, and the next oil crunch is always just around the corner. I suspect that the backlash from the stupidity going on in Washington right now is going to be nothing short of seismic. Porsche needs to skate where the proverbial puck is going.
