The 996 to 997 was far from just "simple design changes." Even an uninformed observer would have no difficulty distinguishing the two models, inside and out. Likewise, the 997 to 991 was a huge (admittedly, bigger) leap. On the other hand, ignoring some underlying technical stuff, Porsche could probably get away with marketing the 992 as a 991.3 if they really wanted to.

Those things were manic. The 128i even was a wild ride, with 230HP!

Likewise the 991 vs the 992.

I think there's a high probability that one day we will look back on the 992's tail light design with the same disdain we do the 996's headlight design.

With all the pre-992 release feedback here, count on Porsche making changes to it, or do a complete redesign for the subsequent year to correct the negative feedbacks. Yes, it does look like a cockup so far.

Agree to disagree then. I think 996>997 and 997>991 are both much bigger [visual] jumps than the iterative 992. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, we don't know anything yet about possible underlying technical changes for the 992 generation. It's a bit early to say there's no big jump just from looking at the design of the mules. Also 991.1 Carrera to 991.2 turbo Carrera was arguably a significant technical change without significant visual impact.

I’ll just write that I hope you are right and the finished model just looks iterative. If it doesn't look inside and out like a Panamera coupe, then I might order one. Meanwhile, I have my build slot in November for a 991 and why I have delayed it until then. I’ll gladly eat my negative comments and order a 992 if it turns out better in the final version.

I am not a purist in any sense. I like advancement and accept that the next thing might be a 'better' thing. As I was contemplating my 991.2 GTS order and hoping to get an allocation I saw those pics a couple months back of the yellow 992 rear. Not a fan - solidified my push for that allocation. The 992 hood lines dont look good to me either. I really like the Audi R8 interior tech, so a move in that basic direction would be nice I think. I have never come around to like much about the 996, but maybe after seeing some 992's on the road I will have a change of mind.

Default Just Ugly

Sorry I find 992 incredibly unattractive. The rear just looks awful. Big kudos to design team.
