I've had 5 over the years. Wouldn't have a cab or Targa without one, but in the US, you have to hold the up/down switch the entire time the top is going up or down. Is it the same in the UK? I thought ROW was one touch? For me it's worth it to have one touch operation though if I come out and the car has been sitting in the sun it's nice to put the top down as you approach the vehicle.
Never got a discount as far as I can remember but they're around $450 USD here. I did have one malfunction and they turned it around in 24 hours which makes me think 1) great customer service and 2) few malfunctions.
If you install it yourself, getting the clip disconnected from the factory unit can be somewhat difficult in my experience.
1000% recommend, especially if your 911 is a manual, since the stock buttons require you to hold them down the entire time the top or windscreen is going down/up. Also nice and very convenient to be able to get out of car with top down and lock and put top up as you walk away.
I have had them in my 991.2 and just put one in my 992.1 Targa, love it. Fairly easy to do, some cool options as well. Top up and down one touch inside and one long press on the remote. Windows up or down upon opening (notice when you put it down now, the windows roll up instead of staying down - you can program it any way you would like them).
Though in the targa I do not use it often, you can also put the targa top up or down if it is rolling under 10MPH or so. This is nice if you are slowing coming to a stop or starting to roll, and it is not quite up or down at a stop light - very helpful - but you would not want to push this too much with the weight of the top on the targa, I make sure it is a flat level surface if I am rolling...
I thought Europe spec cars you could put the top up and down with the fob by default? You might not be able to program some of the cooler features (as described above) - but the main reason I did it is to use the fob and not have to be in the car, if mine did that - I would not be spending 500 to buy one for the other features/customizations.
Have had 2 (991.2 & 992.1) cabrios but the dealer discouraged me from installing one, said they can lead to issues. Have looked for a local reseller in the SoFlo area but got zero response from the Smart top website. Really wish this along with programable / mode switches in the center console was something Porsche offered from stock. Frustrating when you know how easily the code could be changed.

Having had one since my 991.2 Targa and on my current ones. Not sure why your dealer thinks it would be an issue, since the European markets have it. My dealer knows I have had it on most of my targas the last 10 years, they think it is cool and have even said wish it came standard in NA.
It is hugely helpful to them when going into service mode, etc. They do not have to climb in and out of the car, they just use my fob - so they actually love it from a service stand point (the targas have to go into service mode (rear glass retracted) to do any service. So actually helpful being able to do it standing outside the car...
