Starting PCM when not in a cell reception area?

Starting PCM when not in a cell reception area?
So last night i was at a remote part of VA that had spotty cell reception. When i started my car up it gave me some weird message i cant remember exactly, but to the effect of- cant load personal profile, and gave me options to use a guest profile, set one up, or 3rd option i dont remember now. It looked almost like it was a first time loading.
It gave me no options to go to the home screen or anythjng else. I was driving so i couldnt pay a lot of attention. I pulled over, turned the car off and on, and all was normal again. It didnt occur to me till later that it may have been due to a lack cell reception... but that makes me wonder, if I'm in an area without reception my PCM wont load with my profile? Really? It always needs to phone home? That cant be right.
