Default 2019 GTS vs 992 S

Hi,

New to the forum and I'm looking for advice/opinions on two different cars for purchase. A local dealer has a 2019 GTS and a 992 S. The cars have the specs listed below. The dealer is willing to give me a discount on the GTS such that its price is about the same as the 992S MSRP which is roughly $126,000. I have not discussed what possible discount I might receive on the 992, but in reading the forums, I might be able to get about 3-5%.

Given the info, which car would you buy, and why?

Thanks for your input.

I am presuming that this is a leftover GTS and not a used car.

Heads up, if go with the GTS, you’re going to see greater depreciation right up front, because it’s a prior generation vehicle. You have to be seeing a pretty substantial discount to make this worthwhile.

The last time that I bought a leftover car, I scored $15k below the window sticker and that car wasn’t a prior generation model.

The 992 is an improvement over the 991.2 in every way. That being said, a leftover 991.2 could still be a great buy with a substantial discount.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, it is a brand new leftover. When I expressed interest in the GTS, the SA offered $10,000 off and then quickly raised it to $13,000, a little later in our conversation. This on a GTS with an MSRP of $139,600.

Drive them both and then decide. Personally I'd take the 992.

I feel like the 992 is a great improvement over the previous gen. Despite the 992 being "only" an S model... I'd still choose it.

The fact that they are working so hard to discount the older GTS to move it should tell you something.

Agreed. It's a leftover, prior generation model, that's going to be harder to sell each week that it sits on the lot.
If the SA is going to move that car, he'll have to make the buyer an offer that they can't refuse. $13k discount isn't that offer.
The reality is that a 992 S > 991.2 GTS.

You should really drive both. I think the differences are sufficient that you should have a strong preference given they are similarly priced. I would take the 992.

Personally, for me, a GTS without the GTS interior package is..well..just...

I had a similar experience last week. I asked about when the 992 GTS will be out and the dealer steered me to either a 2019 GTS or 992 S. He offered 13% off the 2019 GTS without me even asking... he didn’t know when the 992 GTS is coming (or wouldn’t tell me). Anyone else have info on when that might be?

13% is an SA that knows the job that needs to be done. $20k is really the tipping point for a 991.2 leftover GTS.

Drive both and see which you like better - they are very different. While the reviews on the 992 are pretty much great, some don't like the new generation interior and the multi screens. Each new generation seems to lose a little of the raw feel of earlier 911's. You might not like that.
Personally, I did what you are considering and bought a 19 GTS at a decent discount. I don't care that it was probably not a brilliant economic decision. In the end, I love the car and am very happy with my choice.

Based upon how these cars are equipped I’d say that the GTS in this case will handle better. You really need to add Sports PASM and Rear Axle steering to the 992 S to bring it up to an equivalent performance level with the GTS. Does the dealer have a 992 in stock with these options? If overall handling and performance is more important to you, I’d suggest negotiating your best price one the GTS. If getting a more modern interior is more important, and having a more luxury oriented GT style car is more your desire, then the 992 that you listed will suit you better.

You must drive them both, no matter what anyone says. It is your money and it should be your decision. Those that have 991s will say that is the best most of the time and vice-versa. Personally, I liked the way the 991 looked so it was an easy decision - they are both fast, well built and worth the money. And depreciation never matters to me but if that is a concern of yours try to get the 991 for less.

I would ask the same question in the 991 forum.

There was a string about this a few weeks ago that you might find helpful (including a story from 911 magazine comparing the two models). Here is the link...

https://rennlist.com/forums/992/1172...-991-2gts.html

I was in the same situation in November and went with the 2019 GTS but there is a lot to consider when making this decision (factors for me included size, weight, performance, interior materials, exterior appearance).

Ultimately, you should choose whatever makes you happier - they are both great cars. Good luck.
