I hope Porsche doesn't follow in once esteemed BMW's footsteps, at least where sports cars are concerned.

As for the 992, I'm waiting for a Jason Cammisa review. He doesn't hold back on the flaws of a car.
I have every confidence that the new 992 is an absolute beast performance wise. But the way a car looks to my eye is very important to me, and I could never own and drive this car. The reviews on the car are irrelevant to me and my buying decision. I really don't care for the new styling of any of the Porsche cars across the lineup at the moment, save the GT cars, but I imagine even they will get this new design language in the next iteration. Every 15 to 20 years, Porsche builds something that I really like. In between, not so much. Unfortunately, I'm getting to the age where that next cycle is no longer a given.

I hope they make a retrofit kit for that stupid gimmick door handle.

Great article by Car and Driver - thank God they acknowledged the Shaver idiocracy...

Porsche should address some of these issues now before customers get their cars - like

1) Fix the Goofy Shaver Shifter
2) Door handles
3) 3rd Brake light centering

Fixing all those 3 equal to large profits....

Man, so easy to fix these and but I guess Ego of the designer will be there.....

There’s always seems to be room in the Porsche marketing budget to take care of potential reviewer loose ends.

Well you pull their niggles not their conclusion C & D love the car:

"Even a brief taste of the new 911 made us confident that we'll be able to swallow and enjoy what Porsche has sprinkled into a car that we didn't think needed changing. Like your palate, 911s evolve. A dusting of urfa—turns out it's a dried Turkish chili pepper with a slight raisin flavor—makes roasted poblanos a little better. Lacto-fermented hot sauce is tangy and delicious. "

Personally I love the embedded handles. much sleeker.
All OEMs use common Infotainment platform. Why is this an issue? Looks great.
As has been pointed out:
"The reporter most likely did not know that the door requires two pulls when locked and one when not. Irksome when one blames the car for a lack of time to read the manual. One has to wonder if he will figure it out somehow on his own or if he will be like the Beverly Hillbillies when the doorbell went off..."

Thats right up there with noting that you can't reach the opposite door like you could in air cooled cars. Next he'll complain that newfangled Porsches leave no oil on his garage floor.

You know things are over engineered when you have to explain to someone how a car door handle functions

They always seem to be able to extract $$ and get it out of the buyer one way or another

Default First thoughts after Montreal Auto Show

I had a chance to sit in the 992 2S model for an extended period of time at the Montreal Auto Show this past weekend. In brief, it looks and feels much better than the pictures and online comments lead you to believe. The lines are sleek, the new Gentian Blue Metallic paint is sublime, and inside the materials are on par with craftsmanship that we've come to expect from the 911 line. One thing to note in particular is that the new tachometer is beautiful -- a work of art in itself.

However, reiterating some of the concerns above, there are a few design choices that are hard to comprehend.
a. The ugly nub for a shifter. It's as bad as you think, and definitely looks weak and out of place in a car of this calibre. Most serious enthusiasts will get the manual gearbox though, so hopefully we won't see this shifter often on the higher end models. But I chuckle thinking of this dinky little toy in a GT2RS; that new shifter will look entirely out of place in that car.
b. Cup-holder in the center column is a bad design choice. For PDK cars it should work fine, but I worry that the driver's coffee cup is going to get banged around in manual gearbox models; it just felt like one will need to be careful. You can easily remove the cheap plastic cup holder (yes, it felt cheap and light), but there was no obvious place to store it and you'll be left without a driver coffee cup holder. I much prefer the previous elegant design choice of keeping the holder tucked away in the compartment above the glove box. Oh well.
c. Piano black panels around the shifter: I'm not a fan, but some might like it.

Aside from the pdk shifter, and some personal preference concerns (coffee cup and piano black panels around shifter), it's a gorgeous and very comfortable sports car. I own 2 older 997 models, and sitting in this one made me quite confident that the 911 tradition is going to be exceptionally strong in the 992 line. I obviously haven't road or track tested one yet, but professionals like Chris Harris think that the engineers got the driving part right.

Go try one for yourself when the dealers get these new models in stock. It's very hard to get a good sense of the quality and design from the pictures; these are impressive cars.

So do you lose the hideous third brake light with the wing???

Blacked out badges and looks like darker tails. The PORSCHE letters look odd. Plus they drop down and from these pics you don't know what the heck they are unless you know he design. Looks like a black bar.

Additional pics.

Wing is odd, but ducktail could be just the ticket.
