I would wait...especially as with any new release and platform. There will be gremlins, and I want to see the first batch of 992 users to report them (someone has to beta test them). I am planning to order at least minimum 6 months after the release.
A thought experiment: traveling back in time to 1998 would you wish you had bought a 993, or waited for the 996?
One consistent trend in recent automotive industry has been towards meeting the increasingly stringent government regulations.
Start/stop, turbos, engine and transmission management algorithms etc.
Another consistent trend is replacement of tactile experiences with virtual. Gearboxes, rear wheel steering, virtual controls, virtual interiors etc.
It's very safe to assume that the 992 will continue along these trends.
With that it mind, the decision to buy or wait becomes an easy one. All you have to do is ask yourself whether you favor these trends.
If yes, then wait for the 992. Otherwise buy the 991.
There is no wrong answer or value judgement, as it's a matter of individual preferences.
My [most awesome voice of reason] wife made a good point yesterday... Wait for the 992. If you fall in love, get it. If not, there will still be a lot of 991.2s to be had with a significantly lower price point. Win - win.
On a side note, she prefers the Cayman to the 911, but we’ve already had two of those so she’s pushing the 911. Lucky man, I am.

I just placed a order for a 2019 Turbo S but I plan to upgrade in 3 years. I figure by then the 992 turbo will have been out for a bit and hopefully any bugs worked out. If I was getting a forever car I would probably wait but as others have said I was not impressed with the Panamera interior. I figure if I do not care for the 992 maybe I will just hold on to my 991.2. Good luck with your decision. I sold my car on this forum so now the wait begins.

ive had 2 991.1 and 1 991.2 tts and a 991.2 gts cab so now im getting a cab .2 tts

Once the 991.1 came along, it was so far removed from the 996/997 era that it was like a whole different model.
the 991.2 introduced turbos and thats about it.
the 992 will most likely be carried over turbo engines etc... New body for what ever that is worth.
Apart from the 992 being the latest greatest, i do not see anything earth shattering over the 991. Most onlookers will not notice the difference.
Either car will look like a new 911 in your driveway.
the 991.2 can be had for a fair price whereas the 992 will be full sticker. So your budget might come into play.
The only reason i would order a new 992 is to get the colors and options i want which is sometimes hard to find pre-owned.
I did the buy now (2019 cab S). Life is short; didn’t see the point in another 6 month wait minimum. I got a small discount, but as it’s custom order, wasn’t expecting anything more than the 4% I got.
if the 992s turn out to be that good, I’ll trade the Cab in at some point.
Ditto on the life is short. I was finally ready to order my first Porsche and ran head on to the 992 model change over issue. Ended up finding a left over 2017 CS with way more options than what I was planning to order and at a decent discount.
In retrospect it is great not to wait. I can 1) enjoy the car now. 2) Get to know what options I really like 3) Keep my powder dry while I wait to see the new 992 and if I really want/need an digital dash. I already know I want more HP.
I can't believe anyone would pay full sticker for a garden variety 911 just to be "the first" to get it or whatever. Then again some pay 10 grand for PCCB only because the caliper color so why not it's only money.
I wouldn't spend one minute worrying about what the best president ever says about tariffs. Its just his superstar negotiating tactics. Let the people who actually have to deal with him worry about it.
For the car. If you’re shopping a 992, I say absolutely without a doubt, wait. If you were looking for a .1 because you want an N/A, I’d say go for it as as it won’t be replicated ever again.
I just bought a T, it locks anyday now, reality is that we are not seeing a 992 before next Summer here in Canada so why the wait especially since I need something for the winter
No actually 991.2 will be produced all the way to mid 2019 or there about (exact date not released). 2020 model year will be 992. If you order a 911 now, its going to be 2019 (991.2).
992 hasn't even debuted yet and details will emerge about the base C2 and C2S this Fall. You'll be able to order one in Spring (with possibly limited options) and it will arrive in Summer. If you want one, my guess is you're going to have to wait a minimum of 1 year from now. Possible AWD/Cab/Targa models will debut in Fall 2019 and be available to order Spring 2020, arriving Summer 2020 as a 2021 model. There wont be any discounts whatsoever for about the first year of a model release.
In summary, depending on the model and discount you want, you must wait 1-3 years from now. Plenty of time to enjoy a 991.2.
Other than the 996, imo 911's age really well if you compare them to most other cars. This is the main reason why I'm ordering a T now. The 992 will have a bigger Nav screen and a slightly different interior, not a big deal to me. The only way I'd be really pissed is if Porsche offered a 992 in a blue that I would prefer over the GT Silver I ordered. The new Biscay Blue on the new Cayenne for example. Or the Yachting Blue offered on the old Panamera's.
Just leaving ATL as I type. Drove the 911 GTS at Porsche Experience yesterday. All I could think while I was driving was: what the heck am I waiting for? Then we had a ride to dinner in a new PanAm and the digital dash just blew me away. Everyone’s not a fan, but I am. I’ve been driving an Audi TT for a year+ and the dash is amazing. The experience was amazing. We loved our Caymans and will wait just a bit longer for the 992.
on the lighter side, we stopped up at Perimeter Porsche ( where we got our first Cayman) and they said there were only a couple of people in line for the 992 to date. They suggested it would be pretty easy to be an early adopter. Just notes...
