I would really be into a 992 hybrid if there was not weight penalty. Battery technology has a long way to go though. Energy density has not evolved rapidly enough. It certainly hasn't kept pace with chip tech.

Mmm..... there is going to be some weight penalty. Ditch the AWD system and replace with electric motor at the front. So that will offset some of the weight gain, but still have weight gain for the batteries and power electronics. I read somewhere that there was discord in the halls of Porsche because there were going to be two hybrid versions: a mild one and a performance one. The issue was the performance one would be faster than any other Porsche in a straight line. The electric motor in the Panamera e-hybrid is 136hp and 295 lb-ft. Imagine that on the front axle with a GT2RS 700hp in the rear. Or even with just the base Turbo engine at 580hp. The off the line torque would be insane.

Or a base Carrera hybrid that got like 32mpg combined (guessing) vs. the current 25mpg with PDK.

Sounds like a great car. I just hope they don't call it a 911. Electric bull**** is nothing like changing to water cooled or to turbo or to pdk. It's not "oh people were saying the same thing about water cooled and it all worked out fine". It's orders of magnitude bigger. It's the bull**** to end all bull****s. If that's how it has to end, send the 911 off to automotive heaven, and call the new porky pig of a 4.5k lbs car the 913 or whatever number hasn't been taken that polls well.

"I wish my 911 had Prius level has mileage", said absolutely nobody ever.

Chances are that the electric motor in the 911 will be located in the transmission case, not at the wheels. They are smaller and weigh less than one might imagine, and will show up in may cars starting next year.

Wasn't that quoted as one of the reasons for the move from the 7-speed to 8-speed PDK? 8-speed is heavier, but more compact and leaves space for an electric motor in the transmission housing. It's not like the 911 really needed an additional gear in-between 6th and 7th.
