991.2 Spoiler Behavior
 

I believe the spoiler is typically supposed to deploy at 75MPH and then retract at 50ish? I don't have the manual anywhere near me, but my spoiler behavior on a hot day is way different than that. Goes up often times at 30MPH and doesn't come back down until I stop.

I understand things are different now that the 991.2 has turbos in the back and the spoiler is used to feed them air and cool things down. The result is that even without hard driving, my spoiler seems to be up most of the time on a hot day at pretty low speeds. On a cool day, its totally different. Just something i found interesting. I'm one of those people who prefer to leave the spoiler down, but its up so much it makes it look like i raise it on purpose every time i get in the car, I'm sort of wishing Porsche had designed the 991.2's a little different so the spoiler looked more like it was supposed to be up, or had an option to have a small wing instead, like the Turbo. Maybe the 992 will be different, but all images so far make its spoiler look like something i would rather not raise at all in day to day traffic.

I know this is petty stuff, but its a forum, and I'm curious what you guys have noticed with it or what your thoughts are. Next time, i'd love to get the aero kit I've seen on many of the 991.1's, not sure which option that is though.

I think the purpose of the spoiler is to keep the car from lifting, which only happens at extreme speeds, so really it is for downforce. Mine seems fine and I really pay no attention. I prefer not to see the spoiler but I do like how it goes up and down on it's own. I have no idea why a Honda Accord or Toyota Celica, and may other cars have one at all. I remember the Superbird from the sixties at the Plymouth dealer, it was around $4,200 on the sticker, it had a very tall spoiler with the Roadrunner on it. My dad screwed up and bought the Fury II stationwagon.

The spoiler really serves to put a down force on the rear wheels for increased traction at high speed. In normal everyday driving it does nothing. on the track it is useful.

Mine does the same thing in my .2. I've even had it raise to the - open sunroof - level just driving 30/35 on a hot day in Tampa.

I just heard Jrod is trading in his 991.1 in for a 991.2.

In the owner's manual for the 997.2, it also notes that the spoiler can deploy depending not only on speed but underhood temperatures as well. Not sure the 991 would be any different.

When needed, the 991.2's rear active spoiler can also automatically deploy at lower speeds (below 75mph) for thermal engine management...

How can you tell? I cant see it at all. i gather It comes up to cool engine on hot days.

Exactly... I can't see it from my rear view mirror as well but I know it deploys at lower speeds on hot/humid days because my buddies tell my active spoiler can't make up its mind.... :D

I drive by a lot of reflective buildings. That's how I know. I can only see it in the rear mirror while traveling at high speeds and opening the sun roof, then it goes higher.

I drive by other cars at illegal speeds just to see if the spoiler of my 2015 GTS is extended. I owned my 2013 991 for 3 months before I discovered it was useless. I had to have it replaced twice before it would extend. How can a car be sold with so many deficiencies?

I have my "individual" setting set to raise the spoiler when selected. I've noticed that at times the light goes off and the spoiler lowers. weather is in the mid to high 90's. I wonder if this is why it lowers or might there be a bug in the programming?
