Between the tight European emissions standards and the Chinese tax code Porsche is being influenced by outside political forces. Other than the exhaust sound I see no downside to their solution.
My 3.4 was a real dog below 4000 rpm and they solved for that in a big way. Torque up.. check, Horsepower up... check. Look at the Nurburgring lap times and the dramatic difference between 99.1 and the 991.2. It's huge.
Fabspeed offers a solution if the sound is really that objectionable, As an all around great GT Car the 2017 911S is demonstrably better to me.

Just my opinion. I've read all of the reviews and drove a new 991.2 for two days as a loaner while my 991.1 was in for service. I usually trade every ~3 years for a new 911.
I love my old 2014 911 with it's 3.4L non-turbo engine. I've owned many of them along with the 996.
I see no reason to upgrade at $50k+ to get a newer but inferior car.

I drove the 991.2S as hard as I could around a track for an hour. Then the instructor did the same for four laps. Prior to that I was absolutely sure that my current 991.1 was a keeper (It's been on the track as well).
I now believe that this is the best way to truly test drive a car. If possible.
My next car will be a 991.2. I love my 991.1. Food for thought.

That is exactly what I did. I flew down to PEC Atlanta to drive and listen to them. I'm getting a 991.2. Love the NA PSE sound....but I only buy new and I love the torque and power of the .2s

IMO PEC LA was not ideal for car test driving purposes, too much attention devoted to the driving exercises, and not enough on getting a good feel for the car itself. For a previous purchase I rented the car for 24 hours and drove my own commutes and back roads. Compared to PEC, this was a much more relevant and helpful experience. I would like to see PEC evolve toward a model where I could order and use a car however I wanted to for a day or two.

Good points. However, this was my 4th time to PEC Atlanta and I told the instructor that I was only there to test drive the car. He let me do whatever I wanted. I got a great feel for the car....something that I couldn't do at a dealership.
Also listening to the .2s doing laps next to 981 Spyders and .1 GTSs, confirmed what I knew already. The exhaust note of the .2 (from a bystander's perspective) just sucked.....but I could live with it. Can't do that at a dealership.
