Default Overheating 991 C2S

Hi Everyone, something strange happened over the weekend. I was driving relatively spirited over the course of the day (ambient temps 65 degrees) and a lot of city traffic and I look down and notice my engine temps (water/coolant) hitting 250 degrees. I get a warning to ease up. I stop the car and shut off the engine, then turn on the ACC and hear the radiator fans (both of them) blowing Full Blast and the car drops back down the 194 very quickly.

I have driven around all day sunday and didn't notice any sporadic overheating, but I was curious if anyone else had this issue?

I checked both radiator fans and there is zero debris and both spinning freely. I wonder if my thermostat is going south?

Luckily I have CPO. Anyone else have this issue?

Look into Change/Cross Over Valves. Common.

This was another thing I was thinking, do you know if they throw a code? I would hate to bring my car in and have the dealer just say, they can't reproduce the issue.

They throw a warning, but it really doesn't tell you much. I had a COV go out on my exhaust and it warned me low coolant level. Go figure.

Might want to check the radiator fans up front.

Without doing a search I don't think they throw a code when they stop.

Most of the time a rock gets past the slits in the wheel liner.

That was the first thing I did, they are running and spinning 100% freely

Default Low Coolant Level

My 911 Carrera is a March 2012 991 body, 7 speed(Manual).
3rd Owner, had 27, 000 miles on the Odometer. Now has 47,400 mostly Highway. Been from San Francisco to Wyoming, Oregon, Highway 1 South to Santa Barbara. Plan in June to go to New Orleans, visit our Son.
TWICE within 10,000 miles I've seen a Warning for Low Coolant. Yesterday 5/3/17 Warning to shutdown, Temp gauge read past 250 degrees. Outside Temp was 90+ degrees, had the AC ON, stuck in afternoon creeping traffic, 1st Gear.
Within 2-3 minutes Warning disappears and Temp dropped and held at 194 degrees. added 50/50 Coolant Water (about 20 oz/600 mL.
Had car raised on Hoist and checked for any sign of leakage after 1st Warning.
Called Porsche USA today to have a formal concern logged and was replied to already with Carlsen Porsche in Redwood City also been included in the investigation.

Update 5/11/17 Carlsen Porsche performed a Compression Test on the Cooling System, No Leaks found. Paid for 1 Hr Labor. But while driving East on Hwy 24 SAME Warning message began to appear and disappear. Called Carlsen and was immediately connected to the Service Manager. I have an appointment for Monday 5/15, with a Loaner car. I've also notified Porsche USA of status since they called Carlsen today and are following up along with me.

Keep you posted.

Keep me posted, I also live in San Francisco. Would love to hear if you find resolution.

If you live in SF, I know it's a hike but it may be worth the trip up to Niello to have people that aren't idiots look at the car.

I got this yesterday. Car is a 2016 C4S daily driven with almost 16k.

I was pulling into a parking garage but had just gotten out of traffic and you can see the temp outside was 95.

The car cooled down to normal temps pretty quick, but I called my SA at the dealer right away. I brought it in this morning and we took a quick look over it together.

All was normal. He did say there is some sort of TSB on the coolant reservoir and that somehow it is causing this issue. He ordered a number of parts and offered a loaner. Since the car seems fine today I told him I'd drive it over the weekend and that he could let me know when the parts arrive.

both oil and coolant temps read around 250-260, and then came back down pretty fast. Will update when I take it back in Monday or Tuesday.

Update: Low Coolant Warning message returned after my car was returned to me. (Pressure Test didn't show signs of leakage)
The condition is: AC ON, in Stop & Go traffic the message came quickly and happened about 5-6 times, even while I was talking to Carlsen Service Manager.
Today- Monday May 15th, I was given a Loaner and Carlsen has the car again. Porsche USA is also aware of the current status. Stay tuned.

Def keep us updated, I had something similar happen to me with very similar conditions a few weeks ago when it was a little warmer out in San Francisco.

I went for a long drive yesterday, but everything was nice and cool.

Sorry for the slow update, it was a busy weekend.

There is currently a campaign, and I'm not clear which cars it applies to, mine is a 2016 C4S.

My SA tells me that the coolant sensor is integrated into the reservoir, and is known to stick on some cars, somehow making the dash readout either a low coolant warning or high temp warning.

They replaced my reservoir with a revised unit and I haven't had an issue since. I didn't have any issues after the post above, but brought it to them anyway. I have driven in 90 plus temps without issue since the replacement.

Thanks for the update! If this happens again I will check with my SA to see if my car falls under this.
