Default Michelins for my 991.2

My left rear tire developed a slow leak so I took it to the dealership to have a look. I have Goodyears on my 19 inch rims, and asked them if they stocked Pilots. He said Porsche doesn't recommend them(I knew that - not NO), and continued to say that the tires were developed with Goodyear for the 991.2 for optimum performance. Michelin is my preferred tire and was going to change them out, but wonder if anybody here has changed them out or has comments.

Further, the dealership didn't have the replacement Goodyear and can't get it in until Tuesday, sooo...

Any comments on Micheline Pilot Super Sport tires for the 991.2?

Thanks Kindly!

No personal experience with Michelins, but recent with deciphering the Porsche N spec mystic.
Got into a discussion with a high end shop that does Porsche mods and repairs. They also do race support for customers that race in the Pirelli World Championship. They know Porsches in and out.
They will mix manufacturer's tires front to rear but not side to side. They also mix levels of N spec tires.
They acknowledge that the 4S is a superior tire and would not hesitate to install them on any Porsche.
Porsche and Tirerack will tell you not to even mix N levels.
You must do the research and decide for yourself, but when mine are worn out, I'll put the Michelins on my car.

Thanks for the reply, 4pipes. I just called my local tire installer and they aren't sure their machine can't mount these wide tires. So, I may need to install the tires at the Porsche dealership.

How was the road noise with your Goodyears? I have the Yokohamas on my base 991.2 and they're pretty loud, though the ride and handling are fine. Have you had a chance to drive cars fitted with both tires?

No, I haven't ever driven on Yokohamas and have been told not to bother with them. I had Goodyears on my BMW and didn't like them - too loud and put Michelins on. The ride, steering, and road noise improved dramatically.

According to someone I know at Porsche, the Yokohamas have more grip thanr than the Goodyears. I have no way of confirming that, but they are very loud.

Ditto. Will do the Pilot Sport 4S next time around after getting a close look at them at Sebring 12hr but unfortunately were not available yet on my last switch out. Had mine mounted at dealership.

Same here. I will always opt for the Pilot Sports when available.

Okay, that does it and thanks all for the responses. For some reason, the dealership was steering me away from them.

To put one Goodyear on my car to replace the one with the leak (from a nail) is $600. To put on a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports, mounted and balanced, is $1420.

MPSS are the best tires on the market for street. Period. Look at any reviews online and the data proves all others are inferior. The replacement ones will be what I replace mine with.

Michelin are by far my choice and I'd testify that they are in fact superior.

I have friends that I respect that discriminate towards Goodyear and Pirelli also. Tires have gotten really good in the past couple of years across the board...

My dealership didn't seem interested in putting Michelins on my car. In fact, I had asked twice for a quotation for installation and never got it. So, I ordered the Michelin PSS tires through Tire Rack on Monday and shipped the same day to an authorized installer. The tires are going to be put on a Great Falls Exxon. I called them and looked at their website. As it turns out, they are a family owned service station, a Michelin distributor themselves, and after a phone call to them, it was obvious they know Porsches.

Check out the pics on this Google search:

Here is their website for my pals in Virginia:

http://greatfallsexxon.com

Now if they could only store my summer tires when I put on the winters...

PS - I mentioned above they are a Michelin distributor, but told me I could get a better price from Tire Rack on these tires and should buy them there. That is real customer-oriented service!
