I just bought my first Porsche, a 2015 911 cabrio. It came with 20" wheels and Pirelli "stock" tires. The ride is a little too stiff for our lousy LA area freeways. I've heard that changing to 19" wheels with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires would create a more compliant ride. Any thoughts?

I think 19's will help. There is also a "comfort" tire pressure setting for the tires to help the ride a bit. It should be listed in your owners manual.

Not that this will help you, but I test drove a 2015 911 without PASM and found the ride too harsh for our local roads and passed on the car. I haven't heard too many complaints about the ride though, so maybe I'm too sensitive.

I found the ride on the 2017 models with standard PASM to be more livable on poor roads.

For what its worth, I drive in the Palm Springs/LA area every year for a few weeks and I find the freeways to be like billiard tables compared to what I drive on at home.

check you tire pressure and lower to comfort level pressure and see if that helps

there is also a suspension module that may help for a lot less than wheels/tires. TPC racing carries it. Forgot what it's called.

Thanks for that info. I have set pressure to "comfort/partial load". I had asked about getting an 911S with PASM, but dealers said that in 'normal' mode, PASM feels just like the non-PASM suspension! Oh well, I'm stuck with the non-S 911 now. But I have heard that 20" wheels, with shorter-sidewall tires, makes for a choppy ride. And that Michelins ride better/smoother/quieter than the stock Pirellis.

Good suggestions here. I've owned 911s with 18" wheels, 19" wheels, and 20" wheels. The one with the best ride is my current 991 with 20" wheels and with PASM. The one with the worst ride was the 996 C4S with 18" wheels, and the factory sport suspension.

I bring this up because I believe that suspension has as much or more to do with ride quality as wheel diameter. You may consider suspension changes in addition to or in place of wheel diameter changes. Just something to consider....

This is interesting. What can you do to a 991.1 C2 to improve ride compliance in the suspension department? I'm assuming you can't add PASM if the car doesn't have it. Is there anything else you can do (suspension wise) to get a more comfortable ride?

I don't have enough expertise in this field to make a recommendation. I've heard others talk about the benefits of coilovers or other aftermarket suspension modification in terms of ride quality, but again; I don't know enough to offer a suggestion. I just brought it up because of my experience with various wheel diameters and things I've read on these boards regarding suspension modifications. Perhaps somebody with suspension experience can add to the conversation.

All else being equal, downsizing should give you a softer ride since you have a taller sidewall to achieve a similar rolling diameter. I have a SPASM .1 C2S and also considering 19" wheels since the Boston area has terrible roads.

New Michelin Super Sports - even 20s - will ride more smoothly than aging P0s, especially with pressures set to the comfort settings.

OK, thanks for that encouragement! Swapping wheels & tires is a relatively painless upgrade. I don't expect it to ride like a Cadillac, but if it's closer to my C7 Corvette, that would be great.
