I had a several-years-old 996 Turbo with Natural Grey (looked black) leather for two years. I was all excited to buy it, thinking I was getting a fantastic product, far superior to the regular full-leather Porsches I'd had before.

I didn't find it to smell any different or look any different than the same generation Porsche I had simultaneously with it (I kept a full-leather 986 Boxster S to go with the Turbo). In fact, when I got rid of both cars the Boxster was a year newer but had 45k miles to the Turbo's 25k. The Turbo leather was "crazing" on the left side of the driver's seat, both the butt bolster and the back bolster. The Boxster was showing no such signs. And the bad part? The Turbo's "cracks" were off-white, like leather that has been sprayed its dark color only on the top surface. I was not impressed at all that the 64k MSRP car's leather looked so much better than the 149k car's leather at that point, with twice as many miles on the Boxster.

I noticed the same lack of leather smell in my 991. My 997 had a strong leather smell when I got it and I kept it going by conditioning the leather with Zaino Z10. I loved the stuff and my passengers always commented positively on the smell of leather. Now I notice that my 991 has no leather smell and while I am tempted to use Zaino Z10 on it, I don't think I want to artificially add smell that wasn't already there. I'm probably overthinking it. But I think I am going to switch to an odor free leather treatment. But if you want your 991 to smell like leather, just get some Zaino.

Ever sat in a Ferrari? It's awesome. Maseratis with full leather smell good, too. Newer Porsches just smell like new cars to me.

I have never really got the aroma of great leather out of a 911, even back in my aircooled days (had an 87 930 Turbo with full marine blue leather), it was still more that characteristic oil/Porsche smell, which was also great. I did catch a ride once in an older 928 that smelled just like a baseball glove, pretty great.

I've toyed with getting a nice big piece of leather and stuffing it under the seats. There is no substitute

Totally true. The only real test for leather is to taste it.

Right. It is a Feynman diagram. I don't think I came across as taking credit for inventing the diagram notation. If I ever replace my avatar with an integral, I'll make sure to give Gottfried Leibniz credit.

I got full leather in my 991.2 and after 4,200 miles it still has a very noticeable leather scent (not as strong as my 997). I don't eat in the car nor do I put anything in it that has a strong odor. I have yet to drive with the windows down since it's still summer (Tampa, FL)

^^^ Hmmmm... I have full leather as well (8,000 miles, 18 months) and NEVER thought the car smelled like leather, at least not like the leather smell in previous Porsches I've owned or BMW/MB. So maybe the smell you are calling "leather smell" and the smell I call "leather smell" are two different things. My car still has a new car smell (diminished since new, of course). But it doesn't smell like leather used to to me.

forget fake " leather aroma " sprays --I've requested -and gotten for free -scraps ( otherwise tossed ) from high end leather goods makers , placed a few at a time in a nylon mesh bag tossed in rear footwell and enjoyed that heady aroma of a high end leather bags/ purses/ jackets boutique in my cars

mine smells like cigars. when I pull into the garage I smell hot steel...I like the smell of the engine. Funny thing, my Nissan Titan smells like cigars too.
