Default Engine Lid Supports don't work

I'm a few months out of warranty, and my 991 C2S engine lid just started falling right back down after I lift it up. The OE part# for the shocks appears to be 991-512-551-00. Sonnen Porsche has them for $45 each plus about $15 shipping. Does anyone know of a good aftermarket brand that's significantly cheaper? Amazon lists StrongArm, Haixun, URO, etc.

Buy OEM. Buy a cheap version and have them fail even quicker?

You're only talking $100 here.

Call Sunset Porsche Parts in Oregon. Maybe a little cheaper than Sonnen.

Looks like Porsche engineered this 993 nuance into our 991. I doubt you'll find aftermarket non OE parts already.

I second that! Buy OEM, your dealer may price match Suncoast, or Sunset, and install them gratis. At least that is what mine does. (Plug for Leith Porsche)

Check with your dealer and see if they can get PCNA to go for a goodwill replacement. These seem to be failing at a very high rate. Just had mine replaced at slightly over 3 years.

Check Ebay or call a junk yard that buys modern porsches. I bet they'll have a few laying around for a good price.

Argh! You guys are guilting me into buying OE parts! I'll take the advice to at least see if my local dealership will match Sonnen without the shipping.

I took the shocks off (super easy, takes 5 seconds with a flat-head screwdriver), and I was surprised that they still return to their extended position after being compressed. I guess they haven't failed totally. They must not have just enough return force to keep the lid up.

Better these than something that costs more than two tanks of fuel. If this is as bad as it gets with reliability, I'm a happy 991'er.

Amazon has Stabilus brand (which appears to be OE) for $79 for a pair.

Huh my lid won't stay up either. Apparently they fitted it with crap supports.

More expensive than stock, but could be a cool project to wire them to the engine lid release

I would've thought these would cost more than a painted key. OEM all the way.

This is a coupe issue, right? My cab has a button that electrically opens the engine compartment. Closes it too

993? No, that was already standard on my '74 S and '78SC. There should be a display about his feature at the Porsche Museum.

LOL! I guess it's all that heat back there in a confined space?
