Suncoast is right. When you change the wheel the computer seen a new wheel and airbag. It throws a code. The dealer needs to re-program the computer to accept the new wheel. I change the wheel myself and have the local P dealer set up the computer, I believe he charges me 15 min labor at about $60.00.

What car did you swap on? I didn't get a code on my 997 and I don't recall hearing over others getting a code other than the normal PSM error that goes away when you drive off after disconnecting the battery. But Suncoast is right in that it's not a supported configuration. I tried to get the airbag service that's part of routine maintenance done, but dealer said they can't do it because the parameters for the new airbag would be different (unknown because unsupported) or something to that effect. It's a risk with unknown consequences. Maybe the airbag won't deploy in an accident. Maybe it will spontaneously deploy when you're cruising down the road. Maybe it will shoot the whole assembly in your face. I personally think these are far-fetched possibilities, but use your own judgement.

I've never heard of the airbag gap either. Sounds to me like it wasn't pushed in all the way. I don't think that would trip a fault as long as the wires are connected. Did the horn work?

The gap was present on two different cars using that Macan airbag.

It was probably faulty as it was purchased second hand (not new) off ebay. The seller seemed reluctant to take the item back but we proved to him it was the airbag and not the install.

I purchased the correct brand new airbag along with the steering wheel from Sunset.

I would never risk buying an airbag off of eBay or anywhere unless I knew the seller and where it came from.

Maybe we will all be killed by a meteor!

The Porsche computer sees that the connections to the indicators in the .1 wheel for Launch control are no longer available (my best guess). It throws a code and the dealer resets the onboard computer. If there is going to be a problem with AirBag deployment the onboard computer will let you know.

This. Ended up buying a new airbag. Best way to go IMO.

So we're back to square one, do it right and never an issue.

First post in this thread two years ago. No issues.

Hey everyone. I just got a Macan wheel and airbag. I want to remove the multi function controls. Any one know how? I’m not seeing the best way.

just wanted to update this post. I figured out how to take everything apart. It’s most likely the same procedure for the 991.2 wheels as well. I plan on adding the following components to the wheel:

Matte Black Center Section
https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/SKUSWTBLK.html

Black Spoke Trim
https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/SKU718SWT.html

should give a nice clean look. I have the Luxor Beige interior so the splash of Black should go nice. Once the parts arrive I’ll post a tear down and build up vid.

Old wheel looking old.

New wheel with multi-function controls removed.
Wanted to give an update. Did the swap this morning. Really smooth. No airbag errors and simple steps.

Has anyone tried the cheap romanian wheels off ebay and sourced the oem trim and airbag separately?

I purshased @blam ‘s steering wheel and it might be my most favorite mod to date. The black paddles and carbon trim bits tie in nicely with the black interior. It’s something you see immediately when opening the car door and touch/utilize when driving. Literally a smile a mile. Love it.

Thanks again, blam

my base PDK 991.2 2017 new car came with a plain wheel and no heat. kinda got used to it as plain and simple. but had ordered the GT heated wheel with multi-function and module from Suncoast anyway.
dealer had to get a code from Porsche to program the install. All good and works. had to get a $13 panel to cover the cutout where the old stalk went. I have not brought the car home yet as other work being done.
now have t figure out what to do to the original wheel. perhaps a belt or tie-rack
