I’ve done some searches and so far all I have come up with is a 50-50 mix of answers. The basic question: When does Porsche issue a VIN number…at the start of production or after the vehicle has been completed?

I “recently” ordered a Porsche back in February and have just received a VIN number through Porsche’s Delivery App on May 13.

Should I start looking at maritime shipping schedules or do I have another couple weeks?

What I noticed in my case was that VIN number had been generated prior to assembly start.

My dealer just gave me my vin and said my car is due in at the port within the week and should be delivered to me May 27th. When I try the vin in the delivery app it says it is not a valid vin. When I put my commission number in the delivery app it brings up generic car info, but does not pull in a vin.

I had the same thing happen to me.... My speculation was that the delivery app has its own separate database that gets updated when your car gets to the US.... But, again, just my speculation...

I believe it only works on an iPad...just go to the App Store and search for Porsche....and select "Porsche vehicle delivery". The app is now a little dated (not 2017 MY) and the only thing I really used it for was to monitor when the VIN was created.

It may be more than than just the two possibilities you've suggested.
I'm not sure if Porsche does this; but, BMW, I was told, will build cars to a certain point without a VIN then put these "shells" in storage to wait for a customer order. At that point the shell is assigned a VIN, put back into production and completed to the customers specs.

My VIN was created when the car was born. When it cleared the standard production line and before Custom Tailoring.
