Default Coolant / Antifreeze - Type for 991

Pentofrost E from Pentosin

Well after all the talk about heaters not working and finding out how the little gizmo works in our coolant bottles, I found my indicator resting on the "MIN" mark.

So what kind of coolant is in our cars? The search begins.

I didn't get any hits on rennlist or other forums that answered my question so I turned to the net and O'reilly auto parts web site popped up and using their search feature is showed that Pentofrost E from Pentosin is the fluid to use. Going a little further searching the Pentosin web site I found the spec sheet referencing the proper Porsche spec number.

My dealer is about an hour away so I ordered a bottle from O'reilly and had it delivered to my local store. I had it in my hands in 2 hours since their warehouse is local.

Don't use it. Only use the Porsche stuff.

You can top up your coolant level with distilled water. Probably less than 20 ounces needed.

i am sure you believe these cars are built by and for the gods and that is the reason you did not put a little local [gasp] water in it........and no more HBO drama.

I wish that our coolant bottles were more visible to determine if a little water could be used with out to much dilution. With it falling below freezing daily a 50/50 mix is just a good piece of mind.

HBO does have quite a bit of drama, I think a forum like this is more like PBS.

The car holds over 800 ounces of coolant. 20 ounces of distilled water to bring the OCD bobber into the middle zone is a non issue regarding freeze protection.

Never add tap water to your cars.

In an emergency, grab a bottle of bottled water from a 7-11. I like Fuji because it's shape.

I'd take the Porsche interval and cut in 1/2.

So, for me, in 4 years, that's about 50,000 miles. I'll do it before 60,000 for sure.

For a low mileage garage queen, I'd say about 6 years.

Lease. Follow the book. Just don't buy it at lease termination.

Why do you need to fill?

The factory fill level at time of delivery, I believe, is at the MIN mark.

There is no empty mark so it needs to be somewhere in between the 2 marks.

Mine was fully setting on "Min" and it took less then 16oz to put it between the 2 marks.

I think that's normal.

Like the manual says, only fill if you get a warning light.

Just being a bit proactive.... hate to be in the middle of BFE and a warning light pop on. I might think something broke.

Mine always seems to be at the min mark after it has sat for a couple of days. Even after I filled it up towards the max mark a few day later, it was back at min. Took it in, but dealer tested and said no leaks. SA said same thing, unless you get a warning light, don't worry about it.

I ordered and used the expensive Porsche stuff.

I'll monitor it a bit and see where it goes.

The car might overflow after heated up and reset it self and end up at the min mark. If that happens I won't top off again.

You could also get a liter from suncoast or pelican parts to have on hand when you order other stuff. As the level goes down, refill at half with distilled water and you have 50/50! Of course I realize I'm a bit old fashioned, but I do live a few hours from the dealer so like to have things on hand.
