Default Do you avoid driving your Porsche in the rain?

Was wondering how many of you try to avoid driving your car in the rain. While I certainly have been caught out in the rain before, I generally try to avoid it as it makes a mess of the car and I don't particularly care to wash the damned thing twice a week.

Also, I'm probably not the best wet-road driver

Rain, no. Threatening weather or hail. Hail yes.

Is it going to melt?

"Our cars are meant to be driven, not polished"

F. Porsche.

I feel bad for you that you don't use it.

If you're that concerned about keeping it spotless, may I suggest shrink wrap and a hermetically sealed garage

Seriously though, not to diminish your concern for keeping a beautiful car beautiful, but these cars are built to be driven...hard...rain or shine. Even a dirty 911 is gorgeous.

Mine is a sunny day toy, so yes I do avoid the rain. Bugs, not so much. Did 600 miles already since Friday morning.

Rain ... no... but if there is a chance of hail I keep the car in the garage. Last year I was caught in a hail storm. Long story short the car was totaled by the insurance company. The car had more dimples than a golf ball.

I always hear this all the time and wonder, where's the line? I mean at what point does "driving hard" become "driving abusively"?

I'd say poorly maintained. And revs over 4,000 before oil temp is at OP temp. Just about everything else is fair game.

Well then it sounds like Job One is to become a better wet road driver. This means no more avoiding driving in the rain. Also you will discover the car drives the same dirty as clean. Two birds with one stone, so to speak.

Rain, no -- unless I get caught, then not a big deal.

It is a very good car in the rain. Learn your tires' behavior in the wet, then enjoy! Not sure what the objection would be, other than perhaps a concern that others will be more likely to run into you because of their poor skills in the wet?

I do avoid it if I've just put a fresh wash on her and I'm only running up to the store or something. But even if she's clean, if I'm going somewhere very far and I'd rather drive the 911 than one of my other cars, I don't hesitate.

Rain is my main method of keeping it somewhat clean.

I agree with the OP. I hate having to wash the car after rain. These cars were meant to be driven......but IMO they look better being driven when they are shiny clean

It's my only car.

So, for me, driving in the rain beats walking in it.

Answer: Nope.

Bump to LexVan. The line would include not letting oil come to temp, bumping the rev limiter excessively, not changing the oil and other fluids appropriately, not letting it overheat. 911s, even base Carreras, are raced with minimal modification in Spec class and even higher IMSA classes. They are not call high-performance for nothing. I own a 2000 Grand Am 996 with untold hard, and I mean hard, racing miles in Rolex series from the early and mid 2000s and the thing is still rock solid. Granted, it is on its second motor, but it was no garage queen, Even a dozen track weekends a year aren't going to wear out these cars. Good maintenance, thats the key.
