New tires, when?
What kind of tires did you have and how many miles were on them when you replaced them?
I have the oem pirelli pzero's 295/30zr20 and 245/35zr20. 22k miles on them.
I'm just wondering when I need to start thinking about new tires.

OEM Pirellis 305 rears changed at 12k. From what I've heard the rears wear approx 2x faster than the fronts. Plan on swapping over to these at 20-25k. T http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ire=03YR0PSSXL

I'm replacing my rear Pirelli 305/30/20 in late May with Tire Rack. I'll have just under 15,000 miles on the rears. Fronts are fine. I'd like to try and get another couple-few thousand miles on them, but I want to go to parade in June, and am concerned about driving in the rain on the current tires. I'm into the wear indicators on the inner portion now.
I really like the Pirellis. They've been just fine. When I replace all 4 next year, I may go Michelin Super Sports or another high performance tire, if more selection comes out in our sizes. I want dry performance, not interested in a tire that's good in the wet. I wish they made PS2's in my size or Yoko AD08Rs.
Happy with the mileage. I'm used to only getting about 8-12,000 on my 911s in the past. The 991 is pretty good on the tires.

Pro Tip
On many tires, there are little arrows at the extreme diameter of the tire. This tells you where the wear bars are located
On our Pirellis, the little arrow is replaced by the letters "TWI".

This will help you locate them. Reach in and feel 'em.

The best part, they tried recommending that I replace the rear tires, after having replaced them 1 year prior, and having less than 1500 miles on them. And I was not driving the car that hard. Comical!!
I am not as dumb as I look!

20k miles on the OEM 19" Goodyears and front and rear have plenty of tread (definitely more in front) and no excessive inside rear wear.
Unfortunately, the rears just seemed to start getting annoyingly loud...

Usually by the time the tire is on the wear bars (2 /32's), its pretty sub-standard in smoothness, noise and certainly wet weather performance. I tend to replace most my tires right around 4/32's or at the latest 3/32's, I never go all the way down to used-up. New tires are so much better - and its the one place on the car you don't want to economize as that's as thats your contact point with the blacktop and they are a critical component of the car.

True, I don't think I've ever taken them all the way dead to the wear bars. The only time I've ever had really bad noise issues on old tires though was when the tires on my M3 had cupped.
I think if you get 15k out of a rear and 25 k out of a front on these performance tires, you're doing pretty good.
