Now that I've gotten off my butt and made a profile - after 4 years of lurking on this site - I get to read about one of my favorite car journos driving the color and spec GTS I am shopping for!

What I love about Chris Harris, in spite of his clutch fetish he'll still point out downsides, and get to the bottom of things: "The wider bodywork isn’t ideal for UK roads and the electric steering is miles, miles more communicative than in the last 991 I drove. I will investigate whether this is a software change or just a quirk of the wider chassis."

Harris was the first (probably the only one) to point out that the GT3 steering feels different because of software. Based on that, I was saying even before the GTS came out that Porsche would probably tweak its steering. Has any one of the many RL'ers who've driven both S and GTS commented? Not a one. Now here he is again saying the GTS steering is "miles, miles more communicative."

Harris hype? Or RL'er reluctance? Dunno. But I'm sure Chris will find out they tweaked the software.

Thanks for posting! I somehow missed this in my twitter feed (well, that and I'm buried in work). Looking forward to reading more about the experience over the next 6 months.

Interesting that he says "Exclusive to the GTS is a 10mm drop in ride height". Unless the European GTS is different from the US cars, you do not get the extra 10mm drop unless you opt for SPASM. Sure, the GTS is 10mm lower then a base model Carrera suspension, but the same as a Carrera S.

Once again a reference to the somehow improved 7spd manual: "The shift is now much better than earlier versions of the 7-speeder, even if the 5th-6th-7th relationship doesn’t quite feel entirely natural".

Still curious if the improvement is internal or due to improved linkage.

Its internal. What happened was they developed a whole new gear mechanism capable of greater speed and efficiency. Then, since the parts are almost all the same, they copied it over from PDK to the manual. Same as its always been.

Not meant to be adversarial, merely curious, but where is the evidence/information for this internal redesign?

I've owned both a 14 C4S 7MT and a 15 C2GTS 7MT. I don't believe there's any difference in the MT or the steering. I think it's an urban myth that everyone is repeating.

And when did this development of the whole new gear mechanism occur, and the copying of it from the PDK to the manual? Are you saying the PDK in the 2015 991 is new and improved over the previous years of the 991?

Its a joke. The unspoken assumption behind improvements in the manual is they are improvements in the manual. In fact Porsche developed PDK, then based the manual off of that. That's comedy for you. People have to know what's going on to get the joke.
