Will dropping in the oil filter lower the oil level 200 to 300 ML's?

I’m usually pretty good at this. My first “overfill”. Since you don’t think this is fatal I may see what happens on my next drive. Good question about what is held in the oil filter. Not much I would imagine, due to position.

I like the $50 extractor. Might be a good tool to have around anyway. I’ll probably order one. But has anyone gained access to the sump? Just for grins I tried putting a hose down the filler and that was a no-go. Feels like there is a screen or something a few inches down. Is there access through the filter opening?

You really will be fine. The yellow warning is only cautionary. It will go away after several hundred miles.

An extractor won't work on our cars, because you can't access the oil through the filler cap.

Damn it, I tried and he’s correct. No go.

You can loosen the drain plug a little and let some oil drain out into your catch pan. It's easy to control with some rubber gloves on then just tighten back up.

I will probably give it a drive or two and see what happens per LexVan’s suggestion. But I do wonder if there is a path to the sump through the opening at the base of the oil filter?

Brad, I'd bet if you run in Sport Plus mode (if you have Sport Chrono) with the lower oil temperature loop, you won't even trip the yellow overfill sensor.

I’ll do that. What’s the theory behind that?

Here's the math Brad, if you're into that kind of thing. I posted this a couple years ago:

Max expansion starts to happen above the 210-215 mark.

Specific volume of a unit can be expressed as

The change in the units volume when temperature change can be expressed as

dV = V0 β (t1 - t0) (2)

v = 1 / ρ = V / m (1)

where

v = specific volume (m3/kg)

ρ = density (kg/m3)

V = volume of unit (m3)

m = mass of unit (kg)

The density of a fluid when the temperature is changed can be expressed as

where

dV = V1 - V0 = change in volume (m3)

β = volumetric temperature expansion coefficient (m3/m3 oC)

t1 = final temperature (oC)

t0 = initial temperature (oC)

ρ1 = m / V0 (1 + β (t1 - t0))

= ρ0 / (1 + β (t1 - t0)) (3)

where

ρ1 = final density (kg/m3)

ρ0 = initial density (kg/m3)

Volumetric Temperature Coefficients - β - of some common Fluids •water : 0.000214 (1/oC),
•ethyl alcohol : 0.00109 (1/ oC), 0.00061 (1/oF)
•oil : 0.00070 (1/oC), 0.00039 (1/oF)

Hot engine ~220F and room temp ~75F and that's 145F temp difference. The oil volume expansion is then 0.00039 * 145 = 5.6%

5.6% of 9L of oil = 0.5L

Cool, I actually followed this through. My head hurts, but it’s still cool! Now, what happens with altitude change?

My friend Jimmy says changes in altitude are changes in attitude. Or something like that!

The fill warning was bugging me so I removed the oil filter and was able to turkey-baste a small amount of oil out of the base of the oil filter. I didn’t measure but it must have been about a cup, and that was all it took. Everything is fine now.
