Gotta disagree with ya there petee. People go out of their way all the time to compliment me on my car.

Every time I've been asked, the motive was negative (jealous, critical).

I like to qualify them with something like:

(a) "How much do you want it to be?" - daft for daft

(b) "Take a guess" - the well intentioned will actually try to calculate an estimate. The basher will show his as* with a snide "50 bucks" or "2 mil".

Every situation calls for a slightly different approach:
1. If it is someone I know or trust is asking out of genuine curiosity, I tell them. These are people that know how to look it up on-line anyway.
2. If it is someone I don't know, I just say, "A lot!" with a smile and they always let it go.
3. If, for example, there are a couple of guys hanging out in front of a store when I arrive and yell, "OMG IS THAT CAR LIKE EIGHTY THOUSAND DOLLARS!?!?!?", I just smile and say, "At least!" - which usually elicits a very favorable response. I have to frequent that store. I have to leave my car unattended while I'm inside. I'm not giving anyone a reason to hate on me.

The right answer to the question. Gangster movie connotation and everything.
