Sorry if somebody has mentioned this already, but.... PDK and MT ratios are identical, except for 3rd. For whatever reason they made the MT 3rd gear higher. http://press.porsche.com/vehicles/20...ifications.pdf

Gearing is kind of a big deal. Notice they gave the GT3 lower, closer ratios. Lower gearing is faster. Makes the car feel more responsive. So on top of everything else the MT guys have to deal with, their most useful gear, 3rd, is all messed up.

7th is different as well - longer ratio in the PDK (0.62 vs 0.71MT) to give it a better fuel consumption number.
OTOH, 3rd and 4th are closer in the MT, allowing us to have a "partial close ratio gearbox" at the most useful gearing for the street!

5300 rpm in third at 80mph has been perfect through the cascades, central and eastern Washington, the route 12 Lewis and Clark scenic byway, and general Montana awesomeness. This is an absolute blast in the 991S, wow wow wow Sent from mobile using Rennlist

Exactly why I'm trading into a 991 GT3 in a few months.

Nothing to compare or argue about. You simply have no choice in the matter.

I'm about to order a new 991 and also need to decide PDK vs MT. With the exception of my last 2 cars, (2011 M3 and 2011 458), I've always had manuals. The last MT car I had was a modified but normally aspirated 2007 Z06. I chose the DCT in the M3 and had no choice with the 458. While I had convinced myself , (emotionally), that when I bought my next car it would be a MT, after test driving a MT 991 Carrera S, I was reminded of the role that torque plays in normal driving. In my 7 liter Z06 I had lots of torque all the time in all the gears at almost any speed. In the test drive of the 991 I purposely floored it in 5th gear at 3000 rpm, ( I'm passing a car on the freeway), and the 991 gently accelerated away. I'm thinking in a low torque car like the 991, I'd be better off with a PDK since the downshifts will be way easier for me to do. My M3 seems even worse than the 991 in this regard, but a downshift is always just a flick away.

This thread has been helpful in my deciding to go PDK but I thought I'd add the torque spin to the thread.

I think you just answered your own question - there's no shame in it . I have a manual but realize that given where we are and the fact that young drivers coming up don't want to drive a car let alone have the desire or opportunity to learn how to drive stick, I'm thinking next time might be a PDK for me, unless I get a Boxster. I'm resigned to the reality of it all. Just be sure to get paddles and the sport design wheel. Sorry for rambling, I just bummed myself out.

I cried myself to sleep last night over this. I also went to the dealership trying to return the car... I probably post that story in a separate thread about horrible dealership experiences (long story short - they didn't take it back... some BS about me having bought the car over a year ago, etc...).

And although it became quite clear that God either doesn't exist or he just hates me I will try to deal with this longer 3rd gear.

Some of you PDK guys seem very insecure. The PDK is a great transmission. Enjoy it if that is what you prefer. I think both transmissions are great, just depends on what you want.
