"Fault of engine control system"
Well it happened. 8K miles and the car has to be towed to the dealer. Just cruising home, driving like there was radar in the neighborhood, and I get this warning!
Dealer has no idea so porsche is towing it in tomorrow.
Guess its not all bad news. The AWE exhaust arrives there tomorrow, so they can install it at the same time.
Will update.

Maybe it's a good thing it happened BEFORE the exhaust install. While installing an aftermarket exhaust system (cat-back) shouldn't be a problem, you just never know how the dealer might react.
Hope it's something small.

Surprised the dealer didn't have a clue over when you called.
Usually it's a 50 state only extra emission check/pump valve that goes bad and if that's what it is on your car it's totally safe to drive. You're in NC. Did your car come from a 50 state?
Of course the safest thing to do is tow it if no one has a clue but all of the faults that I have seen with that warning are that same emission check valve. Emission nonsense. If that's the case don't sweat it.
Good luck!

Had this happen to my car twice in the last few thousand miles (now at 11k). The dealer said it was safe to drive with the check engine light on as long as the light was yellow. If it turns orange/red it needs to be parked immediately and towed.
First time they found no faults and chalked it up to a dirty seal on the gas cap. Second time the ECU showed an evaporation leak. Tested it numerous times and could find no leak, told car performing as designed.

Thanks for the responses. I had it scheduled to go in next Thursday to have the exhaust installed, so it's not a big deal. This way I can get the problem resolved and the exhaust installed at the same time.

It's been 15 years since Porsche first introduced the Variocam system. Hard to believe they haven't ironed out the bugs by now.

Got it back.
Good news and bad. The good is it was diagnosed as a cyl. 1 & 5 mis- fire. Ran it through the test 40 times and couldn't replicate the fault.
Bad news is they didn't get all the parts in for the exhaust install, so I have to go back next week.
Thanks to all for your remarks.

I'm in the same boat. Started my car this am (2013 991s) and got the "fault of engine control system". Taking it in tomorrow. Only thing that happened recently was a rattling/popping sound from the engine when decelerating...Only happened twice and I haven't been able to replicate it. Will update when I have an answer
