Used Oil Analysis On 991

LexVan,
I see why the 5w50 M1 is better according to your UOA. But, I have a question for you: what about track mileage and frequency of oil changes? ie, changing oil after every 500 track miles, does M1 5w50 still have a benefit? or is it just throwing money out the window? yes, yes, it's peanuts compared to what else we spend on.

Mobil 5W50 costs the same as Mobil 0W40. So, it's moot. It's on sale right now at Napa. $5-something a quart. I bought some yesterday for the Fall oil changes.
I have many friends that DE and Club Race. They change the oil after every event weekend. Don't you want to use the better oil (5W50) when the demands of the car are at the highest level (DE'ing and Racing)? You don't want an oil that shears down to a 30 weight oil, like the 0W40 will on a hot weekend at Road America.

First 2000 miles on OEM oil - lifter noise
next 3000 miles w Mobil 5w50 - lifter noise
500 miles ago switched to Liqui Moly 5w40 - no more lifter noise.
No oil oil analysis but I will stay w Liqui Moly.

Here is my Blackstone report - sample sat on my bench for a bit and I have since switched to 5W50. Will likely replace again in a few weeks since I am going to go play on the track again.

John, your UOA shows classic Mobil 0W40 shearing. Keep doing them so you know what the actual wear metals are doing; ie going up or going down, or holding steady. You should drop the 0W40 and use a different A40 approved oil. Also, skip doing the extra TBN testing. That's just a waste of money ($10-15) since you are doing oil changes much before 10,000 miles.

I will be trying Liquimoly 0W40 next. In a post of mine in December I looked at most of 0W40 oils and posted their spec sheets. Liquimoly had the best viscosity numbers. Hopefully the Blackstone UOA supports my guess. Oddly, Castrol Syntec 0W40 had excellent looking numbers. I have 16 Liters of the LM and will use this over the next 2 oil changes. Based on the UOA I will decide if I will continue with LM.

Here is mine after my first oil change since getting the car a year ago. Pretty sure this is the sample from the first time the oil was changed at around 8700 miles when it was cpo’d for sale (under a year old) using m1 0w-40. I have switched to m1 5w-50 and will sample again when I change the oil to see how the wear metals change with this oil

Polobai, thank you for adding to this thread. Yours shows the ever classic Mobil 0W40 shearing. Your oil is out of spec, and falling to a 30 weight. These turbo 3.0L really beat the oil up. And being in Florida is a great reason for you to run a new A40 approved 5W40 or 5W50 (preferred) oil next time.

I still cant understand why anyone cares about this stuff. Really... what are you going to do about it besides go to 5-50 and be done with it.
