I got the base, and it is not that great, but it is good enough at moderate volumes. I have not heard the Bose, but I have never been impressed by them in BMWs. Best bet is to go to the dealer and try them all.

But like the others said, I keep turning the sound off and just listen to the exhaust. I find myself doing mini accelerations around 4k rpm just to hear it over and over again. This is also our first Porsche so that may get old eventually, but I doubt it.

I got the base to save some money. Most of the time its ok but am not a audiophile. I have at times had to turn the volume down to keep from cringing.

Rainier, I would be interested in hearing what replacement speakers you eventually use.

I thought the Bose was the base stereo.. I love a great sounding stereo and paid the extra for the Burmester.. But if you don't use it, why spend the extra money...

Get that. If youre like me and many others, I appreciate the induction and exhaust sounds way more.
Touche! PSE of course is a must...

The Bose is Bose, great soundstage but lacking in everything else. I would not pay for it myself, but YMMV. Think of the Bose as a system with speakers of better build (like Rainier911 pointed out the speakers are cheap in the base system) but not necessarily better sound. The fancy algorithms to create the soundstage and some bass (albeit muddy) from the dedicated subwoofer is what you get with this system.

The Burmester is very nice. Dont be fooled. It is not as good as a 100K Burmester home system, but a very nice sound in the car and dollars to doughnuts your 13 yo will love it too. The babss is very tight and precise so if it is too much for you, turn it down and youb will love the mids and the highs out of this system.

I ordered the Burmester and have been very happy with it. But if you really dont want to spend the 5K, I see no reason not to stick with the base.
The consensus seems to be, pay up for the Burmester or just stick with the base.

I have the Bose and I love it.....Just sold my 997.2 with Bose and I really enjoyed it. My New 991/50 arriving very soon with the Burmeister. Yes Yes....I love the sound of my exhaust as much as anyone but sometimes I love my stereo really loud as well. Can you say best of both worlds? Playing Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild while screaming at 6000 rpm's.....can you say priceless? I'm very spoiled;I like like to have my cake and eat it as well. A fine stereo and a fine exhaust note are in NO way mutually exclusive! Get the best you can afford.

Did Porsche improve the 991 Bose over the 997.2 Bose? Thanks.

I'm not sure but I was very satisfied with the 997.2 bose. The worst the 991 bose can be is the same but the 991 is a quieter car so it might sound better even if there was no change. Also,i've never heard the base stereo so I can't comment. In a few weeks i'll post my experience with Burmeister/PDCC/PCCB. All options i've never had before.

One other thing. I have a fairly expensive home stereo (if you think 10K is a lot for a home stereo). So the fact that I was very happy with the Bose may have a little more meaning.

The base is fine for listening to music at low volume level, crank the volume up and its totally a POS.

I find it the other way around. The base for me is fine for talk radio but it is tuned (hopefully deliberately) for mid treble and is very sibilant. Sounds more balanced when cranked (although nothing compared to my stereo) but I hate listening to music that loud.

That said I think the base is fine for what it is. I'm plenty satisfied considering it's a sports car with a fair amount of NVH and not a land yacht S-Class.
