This is an interesting discussion and I echo 1Carnut's sentiments. I'm heading into my 9th Porsche, this next being a 991.2 CT and I hoping I'll love the driving experience. My Macan and 981 Cayman experiences were short-lived as I found the steering feel to be dead. So back into a Gen-1 Spyder I went along with a 993 C2S. But it's time for something different, and I understand that Porsche has improved the steering in the 991.2's. And short of the RAS I've spec'd the CT as nanny-less as possible. So fingers crossed I like it! If not, then back into a Gen-1 Spyder or 997 I'll go again.

Default 991.2 Targa 4S

I had a '12 997.2 MT Targa 4 that I greatly loved and it was easily customizable, but I always felt I was missing something. I looked hard at a '16 Targa 4 GTS. Just couldn't leave the 997 for it. I ultimately settled on a '19 PDK Targa 4S. I'm very happy with it, and like the interior better than the 997.2. However, I liked the exterior of the 997 better than I do the 991. The sliding top on the 997 Targa restricted the rearward view badly. I highly modified the 997.2 as it was very easily done. Great fun.

The first thing my wife said when she got into the 991.2 was how much larger it was. I think it is an illusion. As much as I miss the 997.2, the 991.2 is a far better car. I do like the PDK, but having the MT feels more like a sports car. I feel safer in the 991.2. These things all boil down to personal taste and what the needs are.

I am obviously conflicted!!! LoL!

I’m loving this thread as I find myself in the same situation as Fbrooksr before jumping into a 991... I’ve got a 997.2 4S Cab MT that I absolutely love, particularly with the combination of Fabspeed Sports Headers and PSE. But with 80k miles and nearing the 9-year old mark, I find myself drawn to upgrading to either the 991.2 Targa GTS or 991.2 Turbo Cab. I’m NOT digging the 992 at all, so my next 911 will definitely be a 991.2. My Spring plans are to drive the Targa GTS and Turbo Cab to narrow it down to one and start my search. Like some here, I think I’m gonna miss my 997 when I finally make a move, but I know that the enhanced tech, upgraded interior and better overall performance will more than compensate for it,

This is will also mean making the jump from MT to PDK, but I’ve got my 1968 911L for rowing through the gears when I wanna get involved in the gear changes

I had an 08 997 TT with manual trans. I loved that car. Had a Europipe Exhaust and tune and was a rocket when needed. Sold the car unfortunately due to a move and have always regretted it.
I then shortly after moved to a 991.1 4S MT. Had the car 4 years and again had a love affair with this car then just happened to drive a 991.1 TTS GT Silver, big mistake, it's now in my garage. There are many things I miss about the 997 TT, seemed very connected with the raw , a bit rawer experience to drive, overall looks, car seemed more compact and tossable, and the MT, my favorite Porsche at that time.
But the 991 TTS does so many things better and with a Europipe Exhaust and Cobb tune it is at another level as far a warp speed capability.
I am on Porsche #13 far below 1Carnut's number but this current car for me will be my long time keeper. Can't think , right now, of anything else I want from a car.

I had a 997 C2S and 991 C2S, GTS and TTS. Does it say something?
The only advantage of 997 over 991.2 is NA engine sound. 991.1 IMO are better than 997 in any respect.
Also I an with Penn4S, as I believe my 991 TTS is a keeper. With everything turbo in the 911 lineup there is nothing better than a real Turbo. And as of now at least I am not on a 992 ship (yet?)

Isn’t the Sharkwerks 3.9 a big bore motor rather than a stroker?

I modified my Gaurds Red 997.2 Targa 4 constantly. Billy Boat center muffler delete. Fabspeed cold air induction. Fabspeed side muffler replacement. Added the Porsche Sport mod and button. Really had great times driving it. But with 65k miles, I know a clutch, brakes and other major work was coming. Traded it in for the 991.2 Targa 4S PDK full leather and rear wheel steering. Night Blue Metallic. Fun car. The 991.2 is a great car as was the 997.2.

Yup, I love this car and I am sure I will miss at least a few different aspects of it (most likely the exhaust note from what I hear form the 991 crowd). Like you, I did a bunch of mods myself including the Fabspeed Sports header, 200 cell cats and PSE (which was not part of the original build). This car SCREAMS under acceleration betwwen 5K-7K RPM, especially with the top down....

I’d be interested in your experience In trading up to your 991 - Did you do a Dealer trade-in or a private sale and separate Dealer purchase? Any suggestions for a fellow 997-er looking to upgrade? I’ll PM you to follow up

I am a huge fan of the 997 especially in the .2 variant. I had a 997.2 S and while it was a great car, I would never go back after getting a Carrera T. Both are amazing cars, however, so you can't go wrong either way.

PM me. Happy to expand. But for here... I did everything through a private dealer in MD. He found a buyer for the 997.2, I found the new 991.2. I did the sale-purchase through him so I could get sales tax relief. I'm sure he did well on the commissions.

I don't think any private dealer will spend the time you will (I did) on Cargurus, etc looking for THE car. I also drove everything I could get into to make sure of the right configuration. 6 months of very hard looking, research on Rennlist, and reading reviews. Watched You Tube constantly. It was fun. Got a great deal and very happy.

The hard part is I've never owned a Porsche so trying to choose between the '09 Turbo MT and the 991.1 CS MT is a little daunting bc I lack perspective. Either will be an incredible advancement from what I'm used to.

When I was shopping, I drove both 997.2's and 991.1's. To me, the 991.1 would have been perfect if I was doing 5-10k miles per year, which I am not. The 997.2 was perfect as a car that I was going to take out more as an experience.

Do I regret passing on the 991.1, yes, but only for one reason, the price. It was a car in Pittsburgh, only 2 hours from me, with full leather, sport seats, PSE, Carrera S wheels in platinum satin, Agate gray and probably some other things I am missing. Was $123k MSRP and the dealer was offering it to me for $61k with 38k miles and was fine with a PPI. I decided I valued the 997 experience more for my use and decided to pay more a couple months later for a 997.2 Carrera S with CPO. I made the right move for my choice, but I also could have probably driven that Carrera S for a couple of years and lost very little to no money.
