Sibling Rivalry - 991 vs. 981 - Fair Odds?

Before someone is quick to say "enough with the Cayman vs. 911" debate, at BGB Motorsports we only believe in fair fights. THEREFORE, we have taken this 981 affectionately known as "Black Betty 2.0" and we have upped her odds by giving her 991 3.8L power, and now we will add the 991 front calipers, pads, rotors, 20" wheels, wheel spacers and alcantara suede bits from the GT3RS spec line.

SO...please don't poke fun at the fact that she makes big power on tiny wheels and brakes, as they're coming. And if we had an aero kit that we could purchase from PCNA, it would be on there.

This car will be at Suncoast Porsche in Sarasota, FL on the showroom floor for anyone interested in test driving it or purchasing one. Pricing will be in the low $90s and the car should be finished mid-week, if not, by Memorial Day.

Today we are off to the dyno to do a baseline of the 991 3.8L vs. the 981 3.8L. I know everyone loves dyno numbers so why not?!?

Phase I:
991 3.8L 9A1 400/325 Engine Install. Complete and road tested.
991 20" Wheel & Tire Package. Incomplete.
991 6-Piston Front Calipers in Panamera Sport Tursimo green. Incomplete.
GT3RS Alcantara Steering Wheel
GT3RS Alcantara Shift Boot
GT3RS Alcantara Console
BGB "Daytona Special" Rocker Vinyl similar to Cayman R stripes
Track Widening - The factory widened her 4cm and we are going to add another 1". Who can't use another 1" in life?!??

I'm just biding my time to afford one of those BGB Cayman PDK race cars.

Next some performance comparisons?

MayorAdamWest 05-17-2013 07:21 PM

It's amazing how much more torque and power it produces at the lower RPMs. Was there anything else different?

oldman40 05-17-2013 07:49 PM

wow, i'm almost scared to find out how this bgb cayman will fare against the 991s...

parkerfe 05-17-2013 08:30 PM

It would be great if someone like Tiff would drive a stock 991 and 981 on the same track back-to-back to compare the times. I bet the size of the track would net different results.

Whoa whoa whoa...I'm not taking any sides in this debate! I should add that both cars were dyno'd within minutes of each other. Neither of these cars are Sport Chrono cars intentionally, and both are 6-speed to prevent any dyno/PSM issues affecting things when dynoing.

I would do it for you guys, with a video crew and we can place bets on how many times I slip the word "aloominyum" in a sentence. Tif, a true race car driver, would flog the snot out of a Ferrari 250 Testarossa down a 4-foot wide country road and even though it's probably the greatest feeling 5-speed trans you have ever felt, I wouldn't! I have spent too many hours obsessing over why the one car in race trim behaves like it does, vs. the other, with all things being equal in power/tq at the wheels. At that point its a debate over what is better, mid-engine strut rear suspension or rear engine mult-link rear suspension; put more simply, do you want to win the drag race or eat him alive on corner entry?

All I want to know is::typing:
1. When can I build headers for it
2. When can I tune it?
3. When can we race it?
