997 GTS vs. 991 S
#46
So, after reading all the above, I'm faced with a choice. I'm in CA and have been driving a 997.2 cab, manual, as a weekend driver. I took the Porsche Activity Center manual class and experienced the 991S on track. Awesome car. So I'm considering moving into an S manual 997.2, but started looking at 991S'es. Which would you take - 2013 991S, manual for $69k with 60k miles OR 2010 997S with limited slip, sport chrono for $60k and 10k miles. I'm interested in investment as well as spirited driving. I'll put 5-7k miles on it per year.

997.2 GTS is more 911
As another poster said, the 997.2 just has more of a classic feeling to me in general and also has the more classic 911 looks. The 997.2 GTS is a limited production run yet there are lots of 991s. I think the 997.2 GTS is quite collectable. The 991 seemed to refined to me when I drove it...more of a sport touring car than a sports car.

If you have the money
i would choose a base 991.2 over a 997 gt3 rs
drove them both on the track last week, and my MT base 991.2 is faster, has more grip and is more refined
If you asked me the same question a week before, i would have traded for a 997 gt3 rs, without even asking
from outside it does look preaty cool doe

I had a 997 and traded it for a 991. These posts are humorous. Everyone with a 997 will tell you it's better than the 991. And visa versa. Every post is always the same. My PDK is better than your MT and visa versa. My NA is better than your FI and visa versa. My 991.1 is better than your 991.2 and visa versa. It's unlikely you with get any unbiased advice. Personally I like Chris Harris reviews. Rennlist advice that isn't of a completely technical nature.....not so much.

It isn’t a question of money, it’s a question of feel. I sold my 991.1 and bought a 997.2 GTS a year ago and never looked back. It’s a more involving car, more personal, less luxury, more sport; less GT, more sport; less digital, more sport. The steering feels more direct, the car feels smaller and more personal and it’s very rewarding. It’s a weekend driver...and I absolutely would not trade it for a 991S, not even a new one.

I like that the 997 is more raw than the 991. Before the 991.2, I found the .1 almost too luxury and GT car. Now with the .2, I feel the .1 is a good medium between the rawer 997 and more refined/isolated .2.
I love the 997 GTS and think it's one of those instant-legends. I just never loved the 997 styling for some reason (I even like the 996 at most- aside from front- better) and the 991 is perfection to me, so purely because of exterior/interior design, I went 991. I do like that it's more livable, but that's also a drawback to it when driving spiritedly. Given the choice, I'd like the .1 styling with the 997 personality. The 911 fills a fun quota to me above all, so I prefer more analogue and emotional all day. I also desire the 997's steering feel. Though, I feel Porsche somehow made the 991.1 sound better than the 997, something I remembered reading some reviewers also notice when initially reviewing the .1.
I'd say, go 997 if it feels right, or go 991 if it feels right. Can't go wrong between the two. Don't get one because it's "newer" as once the 992 comes out, they'll both be previous models (though the 992 architecture is nearly identical to the 991 from outside, so the 991's will look "new" for a long time.... but all 911's look at once modern, new, classic, and timeless, so it's a wash again).

997 was better to me
i have had two 991s and three 997s i currently have a 997 gts... just enough of the old feel with the new tech. the 991 is wonderful but is now a 2 door panamera.. a bigger cushy cruiser..its all personal preference anyway. you cant go wrong with either

Excellent thread. I need to recover it because I find myself in a somewhat delicate situation.
Currently I have a 997.2 TT PDK, but the place where I went to live, an island, the roads are narrow and the TT is very large engine for this place.
Now I'm looking for a vehicle that transmits sensations at a lower speed and that is very fun.
I am a person that having had several 911, now I have clear what I want in a porsche. I want a rear traction, manual and cabriolet and atmospheric.
Now is where my doubt comes with the background I have told you and looking for the sensations and fun, including the sound of the exhaust that brings as no more racing sensation. I have to say that the car is for sporadic weekend use.
With your experiences, what car would you buy?
- 997.2 GTS Cabrio, manual, rear wheel drive.
- 991.1 S Cabrio, manual, rear wheel drive.
Thank you and I hope you can help me.
This Christmas I used a 997.2 Carrera S Cabrio Manual Sport Chrono and I found it incredibly fun, but it lacked some more engine.
Thanks and sorry for all the text.

Noting all of the good info in the thread, I have only one observation to offer: I do NOT like the front end of the just-revealed 911. What's with the full frontal black horizontal stripe styling? I don't like it. I want some body color vertically in the front. No plans to "upgrade" our 991.2 to a newer 911 anytime soon. I love the frontal design of our car.
