Walter Rohrl simply loves driving the 'ring

Three guys get in a Panamera with Walter Rohrl. They pass a lot of cars- a lot of Porsches! Three guys in the car, including one beside him waving a camera around, lots of traffic, TWO yellow flags, and he still turns an 8. My favorite part though, and my real reason for sharing, comes right at the end. They turn the camera on WR. WR talks about driving the Ring. In the fog.

the guy is a LEGEND

A living legend. I hesitated posting because of the lack of a 991 connection. But think about how much of WR is in the 991. The thing that really gets me though is the feeling that comes across when he's talking about driving. Thousands of laps of the Ring. Imagine how many he's done like this, ferrying tourists around three at a time. You'd think he'd be a bit jaded, but he sure doesn't look it. Driving is in his blood. And of course when I say driving I mean Porsche.

great video, thank you! it's insane how effortless he made that look.

Yeah, and did you catch when he says "compression coming" all low-key just before the car swoops into a dip so extreme the kid almost loses his camera? All in a days work for WR.

seriously. i only wish there was a pic in pic focused on him while driving. we got a couple of glimpses along the way. note how relaxed his posture looks. no death grip on the wheel, completely composed throughout, like he was on a pleasure cruise. what do you think his average and range of speed was?

One time at a multi-region PCA event I walked into the banquet room to see this huge screen showing some guy winging a car around in huge sideways high speed drifts with smoke billowing out the wheel wells as the Turbo he's driving goes screaming along followed by a helicopter. The guy has no helmet, no gloves, in fact no shoes- he's doing this in a T-shirt and socks. Every right turn starts with a little right turn followed by full lock left as he counteracts extreme sideways drift. Very confusing at first because the camera would show the car turning right then cut to the drivers hands turning hard left with lots of countersteer adjustments. Nowadays we can all watch this any time we want on You-Tube, but back (15 years ago?) then it was really something to see this projected onto a huge screen. Did not know it at the time but it turns out the car was the Ruf Yellowbird and the guy destroying a set of tires in 8 minutes of power-drifting blind turns at 100+ is the great Walter Rohrl. His range of speed for us is somewhere between holy crap and wake me when its over, but for him it doesn't even merit lacing up a pair of shoes.
