The question comes up from time to time -- I think it's prudent for the new car buyer unfamiliar with the lay of the land to survey other buyers and be fully informed.

I'm surprised by the amount of handling, but since it's common to all cars, so be it.

Some dealerships in large cities in the USA (like L.A.) have remote storage yards and add numerous miles to "new" cars as they shunt them around from detail bay to storage, to PDI, to showroom, to road freight, etc. I avoid them.

When I lived in Australia, it was rare to order a new car, it was always off the lot and a matter of choosing one you liked, go through the falderal of "negotiations" and a "closer"

How can this possibly be legal!? I see you are from UK-maybe ok in Britain.

Yeah we were lucky to be at the dealer for service when the truck was there. Just the day before, our salesman told us the car wasn't go to be there for another 10 days. They weren't happy at all that we wanted to pick up the car the same day it arrived. Since it's a rare color, I think they wanted to keep it there for their clients to look at and possibly test drive. I wasn't go to let that happen since I know how most test drives go.

You ask how can this be legal ? The question to be asked is why is the function present in the piwis that states customer hand over? And why does a porsche factory software unit allow porsche techs to zero mileage providing it has not exceeded 99 miles ? Why have that function ? The truth is a OPC will never admit to tampering the mileage. (they will lose sale) and the fact that these cars are not pushed everywhere or skates used because even in the factory as soon as they are drive able they are started and driven from a-b in and around the factory. The car is started and driven to the shipping storage bay then it is started driven in truck then again off the truck, then again to dealer car park, then again to detailing shop, so the mileage is reset to zero to keep customers happy but as with all cars as soon as it is set to zero a few miles are still added not to arouse suspicion. The true way is to read DME and see engine operating hours. Now that would make an interesting poll.

As a point of reference, I recently purchased a new 997.2 that had been in the showroom and on the lot for exactly a year. It had 24 miles on the odometer when I took delivery. I put probably half those miles on myself during my test drive. The day I bought my car from the dealer, a guy walked away from a deal on a Panamera because it had 100something miles on the odometer when the car arrived from another dealer. Miles matter on a Porsche!! Even when it's "new".

I took delivery of my custom ordered 991S June 27 with 34km on it. Take into account that from completion May 14 it travelled from the factory to a truck, to shipping port parking lot, onto a ship, from a ship to a parking lot, loaded onto a train, to a parking lot to a truck and to the dealer in Vancouver. The dealer put some km on it for the PDI.

Does the factory take the odd one out for a test? On my order contract, the dealer noted that the car would be delivered with up to 50km on it.

I am also told that from the factory to your dealer, the onboard computers are set to a special in transit mode where-by the revs and speed are restricted to prevent lot boys from abusing your pride and joy.
My front PASM Sport valance lip was placed inside the car in bubble wrap.

If you want something close to 0 on the odo, you'll have to arrange for the factory to immediately put your car on a giant palate and have it shipped by 747 to your nearest airport, then forklifted onto a flatbed to your front door! $$$$$.

Frankly, some of you are OCD!

My (ordered) 991 had 6 miles on it. My 997.2 had 11 and it was purchased off the dealers floor after sitting there for many months.
