Contrary to what the article says. The extra 4 inches in wheel base in the 991 is due to the 2020 US CAFE requirements. No doubt KERS is part of that strategy. However the reality is cars with longer whell bases don't have to get the mileage a smaller car can.

They also got wrong why F1 did not do KERS in 2010. It was a teams vote. The teams needed more time to work out some safety issues for the most part.

I'm still trying to imagine a spinning kers device inline with the tranny???
The one in the GT3R covered by a bullet proof case was the size of a suitcase - no doubt it could be made smaller with less power however.
I somehow still think we will see electric motors driving each individual front tire.
The story is definitely wrong wrt it being the reason for the lengthened wheelbase as it is definitely for emissions and their 'growing' clientele / wealthy soccer moms with kids in the rear seat as per the commercials.

Can you imagine the talk on the playground? Not only is your mom hot, but she also drives a yellow turbo!

When we lived in NJ 4 years ago, my wife would show up in this at soccer games - no one could see it however because every other vehicle in the lot was a Denali XL SUV - I was surprised kids weren't backed over every game with those monster SUVs (and this was pre every SUV had a backup camera days). She stopped bringing it only because the SUV crowd couldn't see the car. I remember none of the young kids really noticing it - it only stuck out as they didn't really know what a car was.

You will see the wheelbases on cars increasing over the next decade. Even in the affordable econoboxes.
Written into the 2020 CAFE requirements is the stipulation that "Bigger" autos don't have to get better mileage. But a manufacturer can average out the fuel economy across the entire range of vehicles. So the smaller super sipper cars that will be getting crazy good mileage can have their economy averaged with the bigger, and sports, cars to bring an entire line of cars fuel economy closer to the fabled 30 MPG City and Highway.
Sure more space in the interior is welcome to any bigger person who needs it, like myself. But its not the focus groups with the soccer moms dictating this decision. It's the US EPA...

I sincerely doubt the 991's longer wheelbase has anything to do with the CAFE. The design basics for the 991 were likely finalized long before the new standards were passed in 2007, and the platform is likely to be replaced before 2020.
Longer wheelbases for the 991/981 will make for better proportions, more space, and more space at the bottom of the sports car lineup for a new model.
