I honestly cannot answer this as I have not seen it happen in person on anything besides a Porsche 991 headlight lens. I can only guess that MAYBE the clearcoat adheres differently to the headlight lens than to the paint. I have however seen many accounts where PPF being removed from vehicles has indeed cause damage to and/or lifted paint. Remember that PPF manufacturers only warranty their product from defect. For instance, yellowing, premature lifting, etc. They don’t offer any remedy to damage caused by the removal of their product.
For the record, I am not a PPF hater. I have full top-to-bottom PPF on my car that is almost 5 years old and it still looks new except in areas where damage what caused by road debris. Some of the damage the PPF completely protected the paint and others went right through. It has it’s protective limits.

Wow, T1T said he saw it with his own eyes, yet you are still wondering if it is a thing? I know someone that is going to get avoided once he asks for advice ,,, who wants their advice to be nitpicked over and asked .. are you sure over and over?
@Tier1Terrier : Are you sure? Do you actually trust your lying eyes? Positive? Affirmative? Have you had a recent eye exam? Checked for macular degeneration in last 30 days?
/s
Kind of hard to scuff up a clear lens to make the clear coat paint stick better? Just throwing that out.

btw, I understand that he saw the clear coat coming off... guess we need to rethink headlight protection based on one poster.

No There is Never a reason or need
we need to rise above the toxicity and try to remember what kinder, gentler and better humans we used to be. There is a direct correlation between invention of keyboard and elevated Douchiness of human beings, no question!
Being kind goes a Long way, this is not advice (I am not qualified) just a reminder to myself and anyone else who reads this

@desmotesta I got a warm fuzzy reading that. Thanks. To be clear, anytime I see a warm fuzzy starting with an absolute like “never” … I know I am in for a super duper special treat.

The PPF on headlight issue has been explored ad infinitum on most of the model forums here. The consensus is that it depends on a number of idiosyncratic factors including brand of PPF, storage conditions of the car, removal technique, etc.
I used Lightwerkz last year (lens replacement necessitated by damage from a cleaning product) and Cesar (the owner) told me I SHOULD use PPF on my new lens to protect it on track. I PPF'd the car last winter and my equally reputable installer said NOT to PPF the lights.
It appears that there's no one answer. You assume some risk in PPFing the lights but of course they will get pitted over time without.
One thing that can be said without reservation is that Lightwerkz is great. I'm about 90 minutes away from them and had one day turnaround when I delivered and picked up myself. Workmanship is flawless and light still looks great 15 months and 25 track days later. $800 for new lens versus $3000 for whole unit from Porsche.

I spoke with a local guy that refinishes porsche headlights and he resprays with a clear coat. With all the options available, PPF on headlights may not be the best but its not like your car's going to self destruct if you do. At worst, the UV film on the light MAY come off IF you remove PPF. Fortunately, there are a couple reasonable options for repair if that happens.
