991.2 vs G87 M2

I bought a new Cayman GTS 4.0 last year and simply love it. I can't get enough of it. It replaced my Corvette Grand Sport. My 540 lease is coming up and I like to replace it with either a 911 or M2. I do have a Model S and an X7 so carrying people is not a problem.

Now it may sound crazy to compare 911 to an M2 but both are two door, 4 seater high performance cars with ability to get a sunroof (a must have for me). I also prefer the looks and interior of the 991.2 over 992. Even though I am on the list for a 992 at a local dealer i keep looking for a 991.2.

M2 fully loaded the way I want would be less than $68K and a lightly used CPO 991.2 (S or 4S) would be around $120k. I know M2 is heavier but it drives very well and planted. I like M2 and prefer it's looks over the ugly M3/M4. I have driven 991.2 in S model also but not right after the m2 and it drove well also. My cayman GTS 4.0 drives better (and more fun) than both but I think I am used to driving it daily thats why? Very likely!

I had initially ordered a Z4 M40i in frozen gray to pair my sport garage with Cayman, scheduled to come end of next month but now I feel I may not use the convertible functionality very much so probably won't take delivery of it. So a 4 seater coupe it will have to be. I don't track but I am a decent spirited driver.

What would you pick over these two? With M2 I save $45K. Even when money is not that much of a big issue, M2 is very tempting car with savings. Anybody has both or experience in driving both extensively?

What are using the car for?

if you aren’t tracking it and or a serious mountain road driver… keep the M2.
The 911 models are great GT cars, they do it all with more performance than an M2.
I track and drive my car hard on mountain roads.. I like the understatement:timelessness of the style and don’t want to fork over the money for a GT3. Hence fully performance optioned 991.2 S

but, for 45k I would save it get a Miata… than you have the M2 and the Miata which is a crazy fun mountain car. The only problem is space to have all the cars lol.

seriously test drive a MX-5…

The new M2 is way to square looking for my liking.....they certain get up and go but I would rather have the looks of the sleeker looking M3 or M4....but to each his own. I would look at the MB C63.

One of these is a sports car with dynamics that set the gold standard, and the other weighs 200 lbs more than my RS3. I know which I’d rather own ;)

Yeah the new M2 is fugly and way too heavy for how small it is. They are almost 4000lbs at this point! Insane.
The F87 M2 Competition or CS is the one I would want (in manual). Its much better looking and a bit lighter, I just wish they had the S58 instead of the S55 since the S58 is the much better engine.

Id go 911 every day of the week but I am biased for sure.

I am sure Miatas are nice but those bicycle like wheels/tires and a 4 cylinder engine would hurt my ego especially right after owning a Corvette grand sport :)

I actually like the new M2. It looks wide and planted, drives the same way as well. The front lower bumper looks incomplete but there's a painted solution for that. With the new power bump coming up it is going to be dangerous to drive I think. There's already too much power in the car.

Yes leaning toward 991.2 and this way I will have both turbo and NA engines from Porsche. If I do that I may as well take delivery of the Z4, it is in paint booth at the moment......unless the mind changes again.

Why can't we configure a 991.2 anymore? Where are my rights? :)

You need to spend double price of a 911 to any BMW M car in order to achieve similar driving experience.

I have owned M2C and 991.2 GTS and these cars are completely different on the way they drive and create driving pleasure.

The M2 is going to have a lot more utility. Also going to have better ergonomics, have free maintenance, and be configured the exact way you want it. You already have a true sports car and a true people mover - get something in-between and that's the M2.

Yes that's the reason of the confusion. Thanks for confirming that I am not the only one to think this way......especially for my situation.

I need to test drive the M2 again, back to back with my Cayman.

Such first world problems....LMAO

IRunalot 04-22-2024 06:07 PM

BMW has lost their way, I don't see any sports cars over there anymore.

They have certainly mastered the SUV formula (their X3/X5/X7 are tops in the segments), but they have strayed from the "Ultimate Driving Machine". Still, based on the review above, the M2 seems to hold its own against the Cayman and I did sort of think of dropping my order for a BGTS and going with the new Z4 manual - however, to your point, damn, Porsche makes a fine sports car and I'm looking forward to the precision of driving the GTS.

Hoosier_Daddy 04-22-2024 07:09 PM

If seriously considering the M2, look very closely at it -- they have issue with fit and finish... they are not close to Porsche panel quality. Just looked over another one yesterday and was shocked. (gaps, alignment, etc.)

Someone here said it best -- BMW has lost it's way. Building in South Carolina is not helping their rep.
