15 Carrera GTS vs 21 Cayman GTS 4.0?
#16
I know the 4.0 was a detuned GT4 engine. Was it neutered too much or something?
I remember among the tuning crowd, the 2.5 GTS was sort of popular. The APR Stage 1 tune brought it up to 400+ hp and torque or something which was kinda of neat.

I was very excited for the 4.0 when it came out, but honestly it feels about the same as the old 981 Cayman S engine. And unlike that engine, it does not sound good. Every owner pours money into aftermarket exhausts and its still just ok and drones. The combination of the long gearing, all of the power being in the upper rpm range, and possibly a heavy flywheel it just feels a little lazy. Don't get me wrong, compared to most sports cars its still great and fun when you're really ripping it, but for the street I am finding the turbo 3.0 in the 911 much more fun and sounds better.

The GT4-RS has a detuned GT3 motor.
The 3.0 TT with a basic tune carve up everything. N/a has had its day. If you enjoy being the guy at the rear of the field, telling everyone how rare your car is and how great it sounds then go the n/a. If you want to be up the front, 991.2 anything.
I find a GT3 screaming its **** off at 9,000rpm underwhelming as i cruise by it and the sound fades out behind me. It only sounds good when its winning. It sounds try hard when its getting destroyed.
They were fun, but now they are just old and slow.
Perhaps one day EV’s will say the same about turbo’s, but thank god that’s still aways iff. EV’s are a joke at the track. Don’t believe the hype. They have no top end. The P100D lost every single straight line race.

You should try it first. I have the 718 4.0 and I think it is glorious. Of course, it's an NA and therefore behaves very different from a Turbo. I think the 4.0 GTS is a car for adults. You turned it on early in the morning without waking up the whole street, drive around town without stretching it and it is fairly quiet and yet responsive and comfortable as a daily. You want to wake it up, step on it, Rev it and it's intoxicating. You don't need more power or speed unless you tracking it often or you're a hooligan.

My experience
I have had a 2015 Cayman GTS, a 2013 Carrera S, and now a 2017 Carrera GTS.
I drove all 3 the at the track. The 2015 Cayman GTS, possibly/probably because the wheels are ahead of the rear axle, NOT behind, resulting in a 50/50 weight distribution, was the easiest of all 3 to drive and the quickest on the track, consistently. With this car, I convinced myself that I was a good driver....I am not, with my lack of talent confirmed when driving the 911 cars mentioned here. In a straight line, the 2017 Carrera GTS is the fastest....but I couldn't put down the laps times I could with the Cayman...maybe not wanting to risk "bending" my 2017 Carrera GTS was a "***** foot" factor.

Winding up the 3.8 GTS engine into the higher RPMs is a solid experience. Can't speak for the 4.0 since I've never driven it, but in general smaller displacement + more HP delivers a more "interesting" drive in that you have to really engage the gas pedal liberally to find power. In contrast, more displacement and/or modern turbos easily provide power at more modest RPMs - great for daily driving, but at the cost of perhaps the fun associated with jamming the go pedal.

911 for me because that is the car I wanted ever since it came out in 1964 and I was just heading into grade school. And since I started driving when I was 8 in parking lots with mom's Beetle shifting through the gears, my 911s and motorcycles are manuals by choice. Who the eff cares what is faster on the track; I'm not suffering from SPS (short pecker syndrome). Porsches are a passion, not a status symbol.
