Yes, but it seems the final payment can be demanded there. They call it personal finance but the description is more akin of a lease. Seems if you lend from a bank the problem doesn't occur. I've never heard of such thing in the US.

It's exactly a lease, it's not your car to bugger about with. I wonder how BMW got the tip off? most revert the changes before handing back. I don't see why it would be different in the US.
