Default UV protection or windshield, side windows

I bought a UVA+UVB meter (Solarmeter 6.5, $213 on Amazon).

The results.

With side windows down, I measured UV index 7.5.
With the side window up, 0.4.
Through the front windshield - 0.1.
I haven’t done any tinting.

Why? Because UV light can cause cancer. https://www.skincancer.org/publicati...driving-linked

That $215 could have went towards some 3M crystalline tint. Blocks up to 99% of UV light and provides a total SPF of 1000

First off, that UV measuring device is useful for more things than just the car. And secondly, the results show that no tinting is necessary. UV Index of 0.1-0.5 is completely harmless.

Does that device measure UV A & B? The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends tint: https://www.skincancer.org/preventio...un-safety-cars

I've got 3m crystalline all around the car including windshield.. Live in AZ which has arguably the hottest weather year round in the world.

I am stunned at how low the heat and sun ray levels are inside the cabin, even when the car is parked outside all day in the summer. The tint is still worth every penny.

I have always had my windows tinted, in vehicles and my homes as well. UV protection is great but keeping it cooler inside is just as good!

Yes. Measures 280-400nm which covers both UVA and UVB light.

Thanks for doing the research! Did you test the rear, and if so or if you are kind enough to do it, which type of rear "glass" do you have?

Yes - however this may be generally true for Porsche’s and BMW’s (incl older models), but on current 991.2 the side windows (and windshield) filter almost all the UVA and UVB light.

I’ll post numbers for the rear window tomorrow. I have 991.2 C4S.
