Hate this feature. Often, minor mist at night will cause one wiper swipe, leaving a smeared windshield. Any way to disable it?

Push the stalk all the way down ... Turns them off.

I've always thought these rain sensing wipers were stupid, since they don't turn on the headlights, which is required by most all state laws now.

“Turn the onoff switch to the o f f position.”

The answer given to thousands of aviators since Kittyhawk.

good point about headlights- another thing to think about is the auto position doesn’t turn on taillights, which are probably as important as headlights in avoiding accidents.

Meh, the wipers work fine. DRLs are a reasonable substitute for headlights in that situation, and if enough rain starts coming down to justify turning on the taillights, the auto headlight sensor will handle that.

Not on my 2014 using auto sensing setting.

With the Aquapel on all my glass, I don't even use the wipers.

Maybe Porsche made your update in 2015 or 2016??

So you guys are saying with the main headlight switch on auto and the rain sensing activated, the headlights and taillights automatically turn on when rain is detected? Thanks. I need to test this.

From the owners manual for the 991:

Rain sensor operation, windshield wipers
In rain sensor mode, the amount of rain on the windshield is measured. The wipe interval is automatically controlled accordingly.

Rain sensor operation is automatically activated at speeds of less than approx. 2.5 mph (4 km/h) if the windshield wipers are switched on. If you exceed a speed of approx. 5 mph (8 km/h), the system switches to the preselected wiper speed. The rain sensor remains switched off if the wiper stalk is already in position 1 when the ignition is switched on.

If the driving speed exceeds 2.5 mph (4 km/h), the rain sensor is activated without a wipe cycle.

To switch the rain sensor on again:
  • Move wiper stalk to position 0 and then to position 1.
Switch-on is confirmed by one wipe of the windshield. or
    Operate windshield washer system 5.
Switch-on is confirmed by three wipes of the windshield. or
Change the sensitivity of the rain sensor using switch A.
Information
The wiper is stopped when the luggage compartment lid is opened.

After closing the luggage compartment lid, the wiper stalk must be operated in order to switch the wiper back on.

Adjusting the rain sensor sensitivity
  • Move switch A upwards – high sensitivity.
The setting is confirmed by one wipe of the windshield.
  • Move switch A downwards – low sensitivity.

Ah, didn't notice the bit about a sensitivity setting. Even so, I will just switch it off.

Yes. But when it is consistently swiping (low or high speed) because of sensing rain, not the occasional swipe if it isn’t raining hard enough.
