Default 991.1 GTS vs 992 vs F type R

I am cross shopping these cars.

I have driven the 991.1 GTS and ftype several times, but would appreciate hearing from those who have more experience with both.

Some of the things I tend to appreciate in cars are low end torque, immediate throttle response (dislike turbo lag), crackling sound, precision and refinement, visibility, compact size.

I love the look of the new 992 but it sounds like it feels big from the driver's seat and its turbo.

the ftype has low end torque, but it feels sloppier, bigger, is harder to see out of, and sounds a bit like a truck

I am leaning towards the 991.1 GTS...

If you drive both it will be VERY clear what you will prefer.

I looked at the F-Type R and the soundtrack is pretty amazing.....can be borderline at times but man it sounds good.

The 911 and F-Type are so different in how they drive and the feeling behind the wheel I highly suggest you test drive both.

991.2 C4 GTS here

Drove the R on a few occasions, as I had an itch for that gorgeous exterior. The car felt slow compared to my 991.2 Base Carrera, which I suspect is more of a weight issue in tune with perception. The R is heavier, and the trans is not as quick, so you get a lot more mass that you have to move. The interior on the Jag is just dated, take that for what you will. The 991.1 GTS will scream, however the low end torque, and minor incremental chassis tuning makes me love the 991.2, that torque makes the car more of a daily, especially when you don't want to push the 3.8NA to 5k rpm just to get moving with some force. Try looking at a 991.2 base/s/gts, the infotainment is years ahead of the 991.1, which makes it feel that much more up-to-date.

save yourself the heartache by not buying anything Jaguar (XF-RS was in my garage for a while until Jaguar bought it back)

I have driven both, but only on limited 15 minute test drives, hoping to hear from those who have more seat time with both

Two different cars. 991 Turbo would be more fair to compare to. That said I loved my 991.1 GTS.

I like F type styling and sound but the interior killed it for me, possibly the worst euro interior in it's class

I had a Jag XK-R prior to my first 911. I have driven the F Type. The 911 is in a different league in terms of weight, handling, fuel economy (yes, fuel economy) and (for me) soundtrack. Any 991 or 992 is an overall better package than an F Type. I have a 991.1 GTS (cab) and it is the best car I have ever owned. I also have a GT3T but I have not driven it yet, so perhaps after some time behind the wheel, that will be my new fave. In any event, do yourself a favor and pick up a 991.1 GTS if you can find one to your liking. The engine (3.8 L 430 HP flat six) is the pinnacle of naturally aspirated engines in the Carrera line and is no longer being manufactured as of 2016. It's a keeper. The F Type is a nice car, but it is not in the same league as the 911.

F type is a fad. Experience will not last. Styling and tech won't last. If you cycle through cars fast then it's a good car for that.

I agree with garfunkle. The F Type already looks somewhat dated to me. Another consideration - the 911 is a 4-seater vs the 2-seater F Type. I use my rear "seats" for carrying my golf clubs. Would have had to put my sticks in the passenger seat in the F Type. No bueno.

How often do you want to visit the dealer service? And how far from them are you comfortable driving?

They are pretty reliable.

The 5.0l engine is a masterpiece. Loved it in my XKR. Too bad the rest of the XKR from a performance perspective wasn't up to the task of using the engine. The XKR was and is an amazing automobile. The F type is a mustang with missing back seats and more leather.

OP - test drive each back to back and you'll know what to get.

That said, I too am biased towards naturally aspirated engines and own a 991.1GTS.

Best of luck and either one will be a great choice for different reasons.

I have base 991.2 manual and I had FType V8S convertible (rear wheel drive version as they stopped making RWD since 2016) close to 4 years.
The FType was bullet proof with no maintenance issues and it was a lot of fun to drive with that awesome exhaust.
I just saw FType on highway today and I was telling my wife how I miss it sometimes especially the looks are more exotic and draws more attention than Porsche as there are decent amount of Porsche where I live (the Boxsters confuse people).

See my reviews/comparison of both cars below from last year but you want to buy GTS which is a slightly different animal than base 991.2
