Default Question About Aftermarket Exhaust Options and Sound

I don’t know how the majority feels, but my 991.1 S, with PSE sounds amazing. I’ve been wanting to add an exhaust component, not sure what, that will give me a bump in power in that flat area, 3-4.5k RPMs, or something that adds a consistent bump throughout the power band. But, I like the sound of the high pitched raspiness of the exhaust, and want to enhance it. I don’t want to low tone, louder exhaust, but something that will add/enhance the high pitch. Is there an exhaust that can do this, or possibly just a set of headers w/cats? Any feedback is appreciated it. I’ve been researching this for some time, and don’t want to buy something I’ll regret.

I have an Akra cat-back on mine and love it, but I wouldn't call it high-pitched. For that, I'm thinking of an F1 car and the closest I've heard is IPE for our cars so you might want to YouTube that for some vids. Good luck.

IPE is an exhaust I’ve looked into. What about going with headers only? What sort of sound and pitch should I expect with that upgrade only ?

For high pitch sound, I think you are on the right track looking at IPE -
. I have heard an Akra in person, love that sound. Header only probably will bring the noise up a notch above PSE on, but not much unless you replace one of the center/side mufflers. There are plenty of video out there witht hat setup, but best would be to find someone local and listen to it in person.

That’s the problem, I don’t think there are many people out there, with a variety of setups to hear them in person. The IPE does sound good, but may be too loud. Also, I’m looking for proven power gains. Some of the exhaust options have posted dynos that show a decent amount of gain for an exhaust setup, but I’m hesitant to buy into things posted, vs real world dynos. I’m wondering if I am better off getting headers with high floe cats, to slightly enhance the sound of the exhaust, and get the power gains. Any dyno charts of various header setups, like Fabspeed, SOUL, IPE or anyone else. I guess that’s what I should’ve asked from the get go.

Since your a N/A S, you would really gain HP by changing out your CATS and Headers, plain and simple. 200 Cell cats from places like Soul, Fabspeed, FVD, AFE, Agency Power. That's the only real way to unlock HP out of a Normally Aspirated car. You can combine it with a PSE compatible exhaust from those makers as well for added sound.

That's where I'm leaning towards myself, either going with FVD full exhaust, Kline or Soul.

iPE is incredible. It will address the sound and then some.

For the dip there are a combination of 3 things that I did which ratified this. Headers with sport cats (I recommend FVD), IPD plenum and an FVD tune. The dip is actually a little higher than you described depending on gear but it's the result of the cam opening up. Short tube headers and the rest will really improve the mid range and help the car pull a lot harder than stock. It's not a crazy increase like tuning a boosted car but it is also not subtle.

Excellent, this is all good feedback. Garfunkle, do you have any video clips of your setup ?

These are the ones I found online. Most of the ones that had best sounding quality, unfortunately, were on 997s videos. I'm not much into the High Pitch ear piercing sounding exhausts, not my thing, I'm more into the deeper tone type exhausts. SO which is why I myself am leaning towards FVD, Kline and Soul. I would love a Akra exhaust but that price and it doesn't even come with 200 Cell Cats, too rich for my blood. Also factor in "NO DRONE".

Kline

Akra

IPE

Soul

Great sampling of videos. Wow, didn’t know about the FVD and it sounds great. I’m going to look into that setup as well. Thank you.

That Kline exhaust is special. Right now, my favorites have been FVD, Kline and SOUL. They all have that tone I am looking for. If I do a header with cat setup, I just don’t want it to be too loud.

Yep same with me those are my 3 picks right now for exhaust. Pair those up with 200 Cell cats/headers, IPD plenum then have fun is what I'm planning. IF too loud just press that nice "PSE button" to simmer her down a bit

Meisterschaft is another great sounding exhaust but don't' think they make it for 991.1, for the Panamera they made it and sounded monstrous and I'm not liking any of these x pipe type exhaust that just bypasses center muffler and I'm paying $3k plus.... no thanks.

Kline and Armytrix are also worth looking at.

You've darn near perfectly described what our Sport Headers would do for you Feel free to check out the Soul header thread/review. I see you're located in northern NJ, funny I just spent the day up there yesterday haha. Give me a ring when you have a chance, I have some shops up there if you need one for install and we can discuss the 991.1 platform/exhaust systems a bit more in depth.
