Targa oil/water maintenance

I had my car at the dealer today for it's one-year oil change and learned something that Targa owners might be interested in. The huge glass dome on our cars has a service mode (accessed in the door sill same as the frunk button) that puts the dome in a full rearward position without lowering the top. This is supposedly done so that we can access the oil or coolant fill openings, or for detailing the area after a wash. BUT, the dome comes so far back that it is virtually impossible to contort oneself back under the dome to access anything.

Today's "aha moment" came when I watched the tech top off fluids in my car. He simply didn't extend the dome to its fullest rearward position. Stopping roughly mid-way so that the dome is balanced on its struts allows plenty of room to get under it and service the area. The tech was further aided by having the car about a foot off the ground, but even without lifting the car this little tip makes a PITA process so much more comfortable. And greatly reduces the need for a chiropractor simply for working on our cars (apologies to any chiropractors out there).

I can confirm that changing the oil on a Targa is a PITA as you try to pour oil into a funnel while orchestrating awkwardly from behind a curved piece of glass. Thank you for this piece of advice! It was a good observation on your part and I applaud you for posting it. Many thanks

Super info. Thank you.

You can also stop your top movement at any position you like using the up & down buttons.

And who scribbled all over your license plate?

Thanks. I will try it soon

Much better! And at least your spoiler is down.

Bumping this old thread since it specifically answered my question about the 1/2 and 3/4 position for maintenance access.

My follow up question on this topic is, since more time has passed since this thread was started, is this still a safe way to perform maintenance on the 991 Targa? I saw YouTube video that stated that the power must be kept on when the Targa roof is in maintenance mode and for it to be fully extended. I feel like a lot of the info floating out there is not all lining up.

Is it still safe for me to keep the Targa glass at half or three-quarter position while I wrench on my car? Does power need to be kept on?

Not a problem, but I suggest the dome be fully extended, open, before closing. Run it through the full, normal cycle.
