2017 991.2 Spark Plugs
So I brought my car in yesterday for the 30k spark plug replacement. I purchased the spark plugs off Suncoast last month for $100 for the set. Dealer charged $580 for install (which I thought was a pretty decent price). Turned out, the plugs I received from suncoast were gapped by someone else (maybe a returned item???) and the technician thought maybe I gapped them before giving them to the dealer to install. Well they did not call before installing them to ask about the gapping, I picked up the car yesterday afternoon and it’s having tons of misfires and hesitates to build boost so I dropped the car back off to them..
whats your guys thoughts? Should I have to repay for removal/install? And should I just purchase new plugs from the dealer? I guess suncoast sent me some previously opened/messed with spark plugs.. thanks for the help! |
Total BS - they should have called you and let you know about the mis-gap before installing. My feeling is they should not charge you labor for reinstalling new ones because the should have called you. If they called and you said to install anyway, that's a different story. And if they do charge you labor for the reinstall (which I am sure they will, even though I think they should not), Suncoast should pay for it.

I was thinking that also... so he checked the gap before installing but “assumed” since I had a tune on the car that I gapped them specific for my car but didn’t bother to call me before installing. I guess I’ll find out later today what the verdict is... |

This is why most shops do not install parts that are not purchased through them.

I have involved Porsche USA to see what can be done. I picked up the car, runs excellent, but I was charged another $800 for labor and plugs :mad:

The tech made a big assumption. They should have called you to verify but they did install what you asked so...sticky mess. Interesting that Suncoast would accept a return on spark plugs. That doesn’t make me feel great.

I talked to Pete at Suncoast, they were in individual boxes inside a clear baggie but when I first opened them from Suncoast my first reaction was WTF, because some of the individual boxes were missing the tops and seemed to be tampered with but idk. Suncoast does not accept returns on spark plugs so I’m not too sure as they told me those are pre-gapped from the factory so now I’m wondering if all six plugs were incorrectly gapped or just one or what... very frustrating and a simple phone call to me before installing to verify would have saved me a lot.. I’ll see what Porsche USA comes up with tomorrow.

Porsche USA gave me a $350 credit to use at any dealer but that was about it. Orland Park dealer refused to take any fault. Just letting y’all know how it ended

I'm confused. I guess I don't know why you would buy plugs from one dealer then take to another to install. The small savings isn't worth the loss of guarantee. No shop will stand behind parts brought in from somewhere else.

I usually do all my own maintenance. I purchased the plugs to install myself but decided to have it done at the dealer instead after finding it to be more extensive than I thought. Yes the $100 savings was not worth the cost to redo the job again but again, a simple phone call from the technician to ask me about the gap would have went a long ways.
