Default Hill Hold for MT 991

This topic has been discussed quite a number of times already. Hill hold is essential for PDK cars.

Its application for many is unwanted on MT cars, but in traffic and normal driving its presence can be forgiven

Hill Hold during more spirited driving (fast take off) is absolutely terrible. What was Porsche thinking? Driver engagement, feel, feedback - all those things that make some of us buy a MT car over a PDF knowing full well the car is slower - is lost.

On a faster take off, the fluid sequence of events throttle/clutch engagement/ release happens in an instant. With 'Hill Hold' engaged, precious time is spent waiting for the brake to release. In that time the engine has bogged down and stalled or you have to lay on additional RPM and burn through clutch creating additional wear.

What are your thoughts? I've been told by the AD that this is a safety feature that can't be turned off or dialed down. I would love to turn this feature off or remove a sensor that may tell the car its on an incline to prevent it engaging.

I have no issues with it in my 991.2 GT3 MT on the hills in San Francisco. Works like a charm and we have some steep af hills here. I've never had it engage when I'm driving hard, track or street.

I've found I can pull off on most hills with hardly any rpm and don't notice any delay. What are you experiencing exactly? Does the car not move at all until the break is off?

Yes. The car won't move until the break is released.

GT3 cars use a different system that is far less intrusive. Its been discussed on this forum.

In my +64,000 miles and 5 driving seasons, the hill hold function has engaged about 3 times. Each has worked perfectly.

The continual revival of this topic proves its relevance to some of us. The root of the evil isn't the "feature" but our inability to defeat it. My Fiesta ST let me turn the hill-holder off. Oddly, that one was very non-invasive and never bothered me. Chicago is relatively flat, so if I lived there... or Kansas... I wouldn't understand the fuss either.

However, my hometown has hills. Audi filmed a commercial in Pittsburgh as we have one of the steepest roads in the world. I've driven standard transmissions on them for 30+ years... nothing has been as challenging to motivate as my 991 when that pesky green light glows.

These are driver's cars. Anything that removes our control is frustrating.

Does popping it out of gear turn it off?

Many thanks - I was unaware of this on my car so will revisit. I have had this on previous (non Porsche) cars - bit unclear however how it is activated on 911 manual trans?

Hasn't bothered me in a 2019 7MT GTS . In fact, I've hardly noticed it.

Checked the manual which explains though not sure I would want to keep clutch depressed whilst still gear for any length of time unless the car is engineered in some way that it is not putting pressure on the clutch plate itself or risking burning it out?

I really don't understand how anyone can dislike this. It works seamlessly and per OPs comment, who takes off rapidly when driving uphill?Just my opinion but I sure don't get the problem.

It has to do with driving styles. Some people can manage to work around it thus not causing a problem. Other drivers (myself included) cannot manage to change the procedure when the HH is engaged.

I despise it. We should have the option to turn it off.

The option to turn it off only applying to PDK?

No, actually applying to MT. I don't need the car to hold for me.
